"Web design" is kind of deprecated, the industry has fragmented into many different skillsets. See my response to Pauro 76 on this topic (http://foot.ie/forums/showthread.php?p=1176525#post1176525) recently.

it depends what you want to do it for.

if you are trying to do it, to get into the profession then a course would be suitable. If however its just for fun then a book and the internet is all you need.

Try to be a bit more specific and then I'll(We'll) be able help you better and answers your question more appropriately.

I'm pretty sure with help from here and a few links you will be right on your way in no time :)

Started learning a bit about it a few weeks ago, and the Dreamweaver/Dummies' Guide to Dreamweaver book combo is going well as I needed to hit the ground running for a friend's basic website design. But the lads here will help ya on your way alright. I haven't even gone near codes yet which I really should do.
