how has it got to do with the premiership all leagues in europe use numbers and names even the confrence in england.
its not just a premiership thing.

a) I think the Premiership were among the first to bring this in? Certainly in England, it started in the Premiership, then spread to the Nationwide after a couple of years and has now even gone into the Conference.
b) It's like ripping off the Premiership (which has the most exposure in Ireland) just to seem cool. It smells of money-grabbing, which I associate with the Premiership.

I'm sure money-wise it's a very good idea - I just hate it and much prefer the 1-11 system.

Doesn't really make a huge difference to making out the players - they'd have numbers on their backs anyway. You have the teams in your programme, so you know which number's which player. And sure if you don't know your own players...!

Anyhoo, just having a bit of an aul' rant! Don't mind me...:)

Probably worthwhile having them even just for the benefit of the newer fans. I didn't figure out who was who for ages when I started supporting City.

Well, even though you know your own players, there's a second set of 11 guys on the pitch that you may not know so well. And since, I frequently don't bother with programmes, how would I know who I'm watching?

Squad numbers does not equal professionalism but in eL terms IMO its a good idea to make players more noticable i.e. easy for sunshiners to get to know players names etc...

lads whats d problem,just coz ye are all grumpy fuks on a monday mornin. squad numbers are a good idea in my eyes,it gets people familiar with players in an easier way to remember than names,plus people get names and numbers on their own jerseys,it would look kinda stupid if u had the name only on ur back.dont see yer problem at all

We don't have the exposure to player profiles and stats that tv coverage of other leagues offers. squad numbers allow us to recognise players on opposing teams and get to know them (and the rude words that rhyme with their names for the chanting).

it's no big deal but i think it originated in WC or Euro championships rather than the premiership.

Squad numbers are good, i think, as they do add a feel of professionalism. Also, and this cannot be argued with, the club will make cash from it. I think it's E20 to have it done. If maybe 10/15 a week have it done, thats another few hundred euro a week. As the club's popularity rises, so will this number. It's all good. Also, the players may like it, as it gives them a bit of identity, and it may make the younger lads feel more a part of the squad.

Anyway, it doesn't really make any difference. Just a bit of felt on the top of the jersey...:ball:

Yeah, they had them in the '66 World Cup anyway (although without the names) - that was specially for tournaments like that though.

Interesting to see that they've never really caught on though - Pat's and Shels had them briefly (Pat's twice I think), but dropped them soon after.

I think it's expensive to implement and therefore unadvisable for semi professional clubs. It's really only about shirt sales.

So I take it Cork City won't be doing it then for next season. Seeing as you are not fully professional.

Of course it's about shirt sales, anything that brings in extra revenue to your club must be seen as a positive step and therefore good for the club.

which is it, you're more professional now, or will be in a couple of years?? Lets just say our money woes have been greatly exaggerated so there will be no chance of us becoming amateur. Speaking of amateur, any club who would appoint Pat Dolan as manager has a long way to go to being a professional club. But we have O'Flynn and co I hear you say.... sponsorship with nissan blah blah.. well until you have some silverware or won anything in the last 5 years, then we can can talk about who is the real big club!!! We will be doing it as far as I know but in my opinion it's not advisable unless you are genuinely making more money on the shirts you would normally. It would be interesting to compare revenue from replica kit sales before and after the squad numbers were introduced.

Was it Behan that was coming on as a sub in Drogheda with "O'Callaghan" on his back?

I think if the extra cost is covered by the extra sales, keep it on. One of the punters where I worked last year decided to bring his kids down to Tolka during the summer. They really enjoyed the day but said straight away things would be easier if they had their names on the shirts.
It does help new fans if they can idenfity players. They might get into the swing of things and come back. It also helps City fans who know the City team but few other players in the league.
