I take it we were all watching the highlights of the final on RTÉ 2 today?

I think it's a shame that the majority of the talented players in that squad didn't make an impact at senior level. If you look at the same squads for the Argentinians, or the Germans, far more usually progress and become household names. The shocker for me is the Ireland squad which finished 3rd in the Youth World Cup. I think maybe 1 (D.Duff I think) went on to be a full international? The rest ended up in lower leagues in England or Scotland, or else they went to the LoI.

1997 Youth World Cup 3rd place team (Ireland):

No less than 6 of that team played with pats at one stage.

And a certain G.Crowe.

Wasnt Robbie Keane in that team that finished third as well.

And a certain G.Crowe.

Yeah, I knew that. I'm sorry for the confusion, I meant players who gave or are giving a real, meaningful contribution to the senior national team's cause... ;)

However, that's off-the-point.

The team that won the U-19 Euros in '98 had 6 players who went on the gain a handful of full caps (as far as I know). The only ones who have made a lasting impression are Dunne and Keane! Alan Quinn and Barry Quinn were brilliant, it's such a shame their careers didn't have much success in comparison to Keane's and Dunne's. George Hamilton said that Liam George, who was allegedly touted as 'the future of Irish football' after that tournament, was the most unfortunate 'loss'. The poor guy's career was blighted by injury I believe.

Nope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_FIFA_World_Youth_Championship_squads#.C2.A0Re public_of_Ireland), He'd have been 16 at the time of the tournament

He might be familiar because I think he scored the winning penalty in the final. He was also quite distinct looking as he had dreadlocks if I remember correctly.

He turned out for St Pats for a spell too, Brian Kerr described him as a "special talent" and got him a trial there while he was in charge of the national side

2 of them played for the Town and were absolute muck!!!

Think he suffered a couple of leg breaks, one while with Luton Town. He went from there to Brentford or Bradford and had another leg break. That effectively ended his career, even though he did play for Pats after that.

wasn't there a thread on Liam George here a while back (I'm too lazy to dig it up).

I think he went to the US to play semi-pro, in the league underneath the MLS. Or was that someone else?

Looking at the squad makes me realise the merry-go-round with the top EL clubs from year to year.

Im assuming fenn never played with pats?! Cork is the only one i can think of, but were there more?

That's the U-20s, not the U-18s.

Saw this doing the rounds the other day on social media: http://balls.ie/football/15-years-on-from-ireland-winning-the-under-18-european-championship/

It's a "Where Are They Now?" of the squad that won the Under-18 European Championship in 1998, compiled by our very own Dodge fifteen years on.

And a look back on how conflicts affected so many of you as supporters and players. If not for the arrival of Ruud Dokter i believe it would still be difficult for many of you to attend matches.

You're a mystery, Crosby.

What's the relevance of the conflict in the north to the 1998 Under-18 European Championship? And what does Ruud Dokter have to do with either?

I do feel it my customary obligation though to quote this paragraph from that piece and shake my head:

This push has been in the spotlight in recent years due to the defection of top Catholic soccer players in Northern Ireland, such as James McClean and Darren Gibson, to the Republic when they turn 21. The Good Friday Agreement allows every Northern Irish citizen to choose between an Irish or British passport.

Ruud Dokter has been behind the scenes for years brokering peace.

No he hasn't.

Was appointed in April (http://www.thescore.ie/fai-appoint-the-brilliantly-named-ruud-dokter-as-their-new-high-performance-director-858641-Apr2013/) to start later in the year.

Ruud Dokter is a football coach. Even if his personal involvement had been vital to the peace talks in the north - which, of course, it wasn't, as he wasn't involved at all - what would that have to do with the thread anyway, ha?

Sorry - I missed the bit about brokering peace.

Crosby - no harm, but you do come out with the most awful rubbish at times!
