Well someone has to pay for it.
And you woulnd't be paying for the forum, you'd be paying for the extras. if you dn't want them, fine...

Boards have loads of subscribers so it's a new concept.
Jeepers, I enjoy the site and all and would be willing to chip in a bit, but €50 a year does seem a little steep.

This open dahamsta? Spotted it at the top thereIt's actually been set up all along, I just never set up the extras and advertised it. We actually have two subscribers already, the first of which goes back to 2005! Good old sirhamish, a pity he got his knickers in a knot. I've been meaning to do it for a while, in particular since the advertising market took a nosedive. The revenue from ads is about a quarter of what it used to be now, and I'm genuinely finding it very tight.
The alternative is to pick up on a few of the commission-based advertising campaigns I get offered now and then, but most of them are gambling sites and I'm not all that comfortable with the idea. I'd prefer to see how this goes first, hopefully a few people will be interested in the extras.
Jeepers, I enjoy the site and all and would be willing to chip in a bit, but €50 a year does seem a little steep.I did a god bit of research into it, including on Boards who've done it for years, it's a pretty standard figure for a good site. (I reckon Foot.ie qualifies!) I accept that some might find it too much, we'll just have to see how it goes.

Yeah, thought that myself. I freely admit I have no idea how much it really costs to run a site like this and what the going rate is for subscriptions though. I'd have no problem paying for the site because I do love it but Eur50is a little out of my league.

its a little over 96 cents a week. Hardly extortionate...
Id likely pay a subscription and certainly would if members got the benefit of a little less moderation.

Subscription ('supporter status') to Our Wee Country costs £5 per year. I believe non-subscribers can't start threads nor read the away travel section.
EU50 per year looks a lot...

Subscription ('supporter status') to Our Wee Country costs £5 per year. I believe non-subscribers can't start threads nor read the away travel section.Like I said (http://foot.ie/forums/showthread.php?p=1183818#post1183818). Like Dodge said (http://foot.ie/forums/showthread.php?p=1182012#post1182012).
I understand some sites are cheaper. Others are more expensive, such is life.
Personally I think it's a pretty fair amount for a lot of extras, but if not very many people decide not to go for it, obviously I'll need to drop the price or just drop the subs altogether and look at other ways of paying for the sites costs. Personally I'd prefer to drop the ads altogether, but right now that's just not an option. We'll see how we go.
Which reminds me: There's now a private Supporters forum, and from next week Supporters will get a forum style with no ads.

Just a thought but i think people may be more inclined to sign up if they where threated with just a tiny little bit of respect on here ive noticed in the last few weeks a few "shut up" or "shut your mouth" posts from site bosses. Add in when people have problems the "lump it or leave it" response they get.
Just my opinion on the matter but people dont like to pay 50 euro to get threated like crap. Might be worth considering seeing as the site is trying to get paying customers.

If moderators are acting in appropriately it should be reported, that's why the Report This Post (http://foot.ie/forums/faq.php?faq=faq#faq_report) facility is there, why we have a Support forum (http://foot.ie/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=63), and why I'm always contactable as a last resort. However I'd guess 99% of people are never on the receiving end of that type of message, because they behave responsibly. It's the 1% of idiots that usually get it, and I'd have my doubts they'd support the site anyway, because they're usually selfish mé féiners that want everything for nothing. I guess a small percentage of people might subscribe in the mistaken belief that it'll allow them to break the rules, but that'd be their loss.
Probably a cynical view, but that's what being an admin gets you.

He may not feel like saying this outright, but I suspect he meant you. You can be pretty curt if you think someone's being an idiot. The idiot is usually aggrieved, and occasionally wasn't being an idiot. Most posters shrug and get on with it, but some people seem to hold disproportionate grudges over minor slights on the internet.

House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_%28TV_series%29) is my hero!
I'd accept that I'm curt; it's unlikely to change. Sometimes need to be put in their place, and although their bitching about me elsewhere makes me cry and cry and cry, it's just my nature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scorpion_and_the_Frog). I've no objection to being told I'm an idiot in return when I'm wrong, and I'm pretty sure I've only ever been childish in my response (unfair bannings, pranks) a couple of times. I guess people generally just put me in the "if he's been nasty to me once, he'll be nasty to me again, even if I'm right". But that's a moronic response, so that's ok. ;)
Heh, no-one'll become a supporter if this keeps going! :)

Foot.ie Supporters should now be seeing the site ad-free. If you're still seeing ads, let me know.
The private forum may not have been accessible until yesterday, should be ok now.
Blogs will be activated later this evening.

Only a few so far, haven't really done anything to push it yet bar the button at the top. I'll be running an ad or perhaps an announcement next week to make people more aware of it, as I really need subs to counter the ad losses of the last year or more. The site isn't in any danger like, but I'd be a lot more confortable if there was a few quid coming in, and it'd put me in a better posiiton to add features. I've been on about it for years, but I'm realy keen to build it out a bit now.

The list has grown a bit today. Only downside is that I've had to disable blogs temporarily, while I figure out how to import the WordPress blog.
Club members can edit their user titles now.
Custom avatars are a little bigger than standard avatars.
If you don't like tags people have added to your threads, you can delete them.
Club members can now post polls themselves rather than having to ask a mod, and add, edit and delete items in the calendar.
Signatures can be further customised with fonts family and size, alignment, images, etc.
I'll be running a special offer all of next week, so if you're thinkiing of joining, you might want to hold off. The offer will be extended to people who have already signed up, bless their cotton socks.

Just tried to sign up for a years membership but only had the option for paypal on the screen. I want to use my credit card, am i missing where the credit card option is?
dahamsta
17/08/2009, 1:46 PM
Thanks Jofsrping. It can be non-obvious but you can pay with PayPal using your credit card, a PayPal account is optional and you don't need to join PP afterwards. They have different screens depending on where you're coming from and whether you already have a cookie. The attached is the screen you get if you have an account, with the CC option ringed. I'll kill my cookies and post the other option in a tick.
EDIT: No cookies screenshot added, they include the CC form without.

Hi Adam, if I've sign up for the recurring 6 month membership at E13, does this mean that I will always receive the 6 month membership at that special offer rate or is it going to revert back to the old rate on me after 6 months? It says on the email: "Your subscription will automatically renew at the rates stated above unless you cancel prior to the end of the billing period," so I guess that's pretty clear, but just wanted to confirm.

Is there any other way to pay besides Paypal? It was the only option I saw offered, unless I missed something?
dahamsta

PayPal is just the payment provider, you don't need an account to pay with your credit card, and you don't need to join afterwards if you don't want to.

Well that was easy, osarusan transferred the dosh to my account, it appeared almost straight away because he desposited it in a branch of my own bank, and I added a subscription via his profile (which I didn't know you could do). Thanks for the education osarusan, and the sub!

Edit - I deposited the money in the Limerick branch of his bank - Dahamsta got it within an hour or two (I'd say it was pretty much instantaneous actually). No other fees of any kind involved.
