The Football Association of Ireland and the Irish Football Association today (June 22) agreed with Setanta Sports to postpone the draw of the 2009 Setanta Sports Cup, scheduled to take place on Thursday June 25.

This draw has been postponed at the request of Setanta Sports to give the company an opportunity to gain clarity around a number of market related issues it currently faces.

In the interim, a meeting has been arranged with participating clubs in Dublin on the afternoon of June 25.

Bad news for the club, but it has been on the cards for the last while.

How? Sure we might only be missing one game from what we would have got this season max 2. Fair enough less money but could not see how it could have long term implications for the club.

Anyway the FAI never miss a trick letting out bad news on a busy news day, not their fault but they're PR machine works overdrive not to be associated with bad news.

No, was always on the cards as soon as it was announced they were in difficulty. Pity though, we could do with the extra revenue it would generate.

Minimum 4 games, but 1 or 2 of them were to be played next season. The format was completely changed from previous seasons

I suppose the FAI commercial dept might be able to line up a replacement sponsor on lower money but without TV coverage would be pointless.

Setanta UK is a seperate entity to Setanta Ireland. No doubt it will have some sort of a knock on effect. Setanta Ireland are profit making AFAIK.

Aye, i know but there's bound to be some knock on effect as you say.
I can see the competition being scrapped, unless the current sponsors of both leagues can come together, with some package......

The Setanta Sports Cup may yet survive, despite the on-going financial problems surrounding the troubled broadcaster.

The British division of Setanta Sports went into administration last week after losing the rights to the Barclays Premier League and the SPL.

Despite the fact the Setanta's Irish business continues to trade there have been doubts over the future of the Setanta Sports Cup, which were heightened when the draw for the competition was postponed.

However following a meeting between the competition's organisers and the participating clubs there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

In a statement, the FAI confirmed that they are working to ensure the competitions survival and said: 'The broadcaster has written to the organising committee outlining their intention to secure the future of their Irish operation.

'They also underlined that they are positively disposed to the Setanta Sports Cup. Setanta Sports has made a commitment to remain in close contact with the organising committee while they endeavour to secure their Irish operation.

'The Setanta Sports Cup Organising Committee, the FAI and the IFA will continue working closely with Setanta Sports during this process.
'Clubs were understanding of the situation and will be kept informed of developments.'
