Setanta lose premier league rights

Lost EPL and SPL rights, ESPN have bought their last remaining 46 premier games. Im a bit dissapointed i wasnt mad about setanta and hated that clown Fat dolan and his idiotic attempts to become the new eamon dumphy. But they did show Everton a lot compared to sky.

After hearing this evening that setanta UK is gone into administration, should I cancel my subscription or will setanta Ireland still have some games live on a saturday 3pm KO.
I only subscribed to watch EPL games and the occasional Magners League game.

ESPN will be using sky in the UK dont know if a fee will be involved maybe not this season as a test run but i cant imagine any station forking out that much and not looking for some money.

yep it will be via Sky. It will be very much like the PL gold season ticket or whatever they called it a few years back. Pay 10 pound to watch Burnley-Everton on PPV....

It will very much that way though you will be able to sign up to them for the season which i am sure will work out much cheaper overall. Sad to see Setanta go but if you don't pay your bills that's what happens.

ESPN was free on Sky over the weekend. It might still be free, I havent checked since Sunday.

Anyhoo, we might be lucky and get it for free on Sky with Setanta losing its PL coverage. ESPN will make a mint on adverts in the USA during these games, so they might not charge a fee here.

The rights ESPN got were just for the UK, so I wouldn't be holding you breath for it being no extra charge based on US advertising.

Setanta still have the Irish rights, and the Irish operation (Setanta Ireland) is being sold as a going concern, so people are probably being a bit premature cancelling their subs on the basis of the UK arm going bust.

Personally, I don't do subscription tele, but will miss Setanta Sports News whilst giving the little un her first bottle in the morning.

The final moments of Setanta Sports News made for pretty grim viewing yesterday, with presenters carrying on regardless even as various news outlets reported the company's demise.

Watching people lose their jobs before your very eyes isn't the most pleasant experience, particularly with assorted back-office types blatantly clearing their desks behind the anchors.

Hats off to the presenters for carrying on, apparently without a hint in their faces or voices that anything was amiss.

Apart, that is, from this rather gruesome exchange as time ran out.

ESPN have bought the rights to the games Setanta Uk broadcast into Ireland (staurday evening, monday etc). Sky Sports also hold rights for the Republic of Ireland market (the same as their British rights)

The Saturday 3pm kick offs are totally seperate, and still owned by Setanta Ireland. These can't be bought by a TV station that broadcats into the UK (or can't block UK viewers from seeing them)

You're right that they are currently owned by Setanta Ireland but if you read the link you will see that the Premier League are looking for bids for those games. I assume they don't expect Setanta to have the money to pay the next instalment.

You're correct that technically TV3 or RTE are the only likely possibilities but someone like ESPN could easily create a standalone channel that would only show the games in Ireland - I don't think they will go to that trouble though. If the local bids are not accepted then the games may not be shown at all.

ESPNA is freee with the sports package at the moment. (I believe). On Aug 3rd the channel will be going off air & replaced by |ESPN @ £9 per month. At least thats the deal in England

It seems that RTE and TV3 really are strapped for cash - Setanta Ireland have won back the rights to Saturday 3pm kick-off games for a bid of about €4m according to the Irish Times.
