Hall and Oates were one of the most successful acts ever, with a string of No. 1 albums and singles in the early and mid 80s. They were the biggest earning music duo of all time. Most of their hits were in the US (they were from Philadelphia) and included the one you mention, 'Method of Modern Love', 'Private Eyes', 'I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)', 'She's Gone', the international No. 1 'Maneater' (you MUST Know 'woo ohh here she comes, watch out boy she'll chew you up'...). Would recommend their best of or Big Bam Boom, a great album.

None of that rings a bell, sorry....

I wouldn't get too disheartened though, I'm not a huge fan of (especially popular) music - tend to see it as an inferior "art-form."

I didn't even know Shakin' Stevens had done a version of This Ole House, although I'm familiar with the song. I remember doing a mean Shakin' Stevens impression as a bairn, too.

You shouldn't have provoked me, I wrote my manifesto on art in several idle moments a while back, here it is FWIW. Could possibly do with being revised in places.

1: Art is the successful, conscious communication of transcendental insights.

2: Such communication cannot, by definition, occur by accident (although the moment of inspiration itself can, and often does, come about by chance.)

3: Existing "genres" or "art-forms" (other than literature and philosophy) are inadequate for the purposes of such communication. Even if this were not the case, the myriad extraneous associations attached to these genres make meaningful communication impossible, because...

4: A valid work of art MUST BE unique. In other words, it must be totally incomparable to anything its audience has experienced before, or at least sufficiently different to engage the audience on terms set by the artist.

5: Uniqueness without communication is not art.

6: Subversion (which is, in any case, a self-defeating exercise, since it automatically acknowledges the legitimacy of that which it seeks to subvert) and deconstruction of existing genres are not valid means of artistic communication for the reasons outlined above. They may be of great value and interest to the sociologist, but are irrelevant to the artist.

7: Imagery, symbolism and other forms of artistic shorthand must be rejected as an artists' primary means of communication. Express, explain, communicate - do not hint.

8: A work of art should preferably emanate from a single artist. Any more, and the risk of diluting the purity of the insight becomes insupportable. Collaboration with other artists can, however, produce the genesis of an insight. Art begets art.

9: Technique is relevant only insofar as its mastery is necessary to the act of communication. Neither technique nor aesthetics are of any intrinsic interest to the artist.

10: It is entirely conceivable that the creation of valid art, as defined above, is impossible. This does not invalidate these fundamental principles, nor does it validate those which currently enjoy unwarranted popularity.

11: An eleventh tenet is required to avoid comparisons with the Ten Commandments and similar decalogues. Remember that even if you, as an artist, are capable of ignoring existing conventions, your audience may not share this capacity. This is why you must always strive for singularity. (This manifesto, incidentally, is not a work of art, valid or otherwise.)

No, it was current in Dublin as far back as ten years ago. I was actually thinking how long it had been since I'd heard it used here, after hearing it (very unexpectedly) from a Scotsman recently.

Still think it's a weird expression.
