appears city are about to sign an Irish midfielder from Peterborough. 23 year old named Tony Shields. Havn't come across him before but apparently getting rave reviews at Aldershot where he's been on loan for the last few months. This info is coming from www.nationwide.co.uk

Then again they didnt rate Flynny, Dan Murray and Neale Fenn. Nice to see that we have a feeder club.

Tony Shields is 23, 5'7" (bit small for a central midfielder?) and originally from Derry. He played briefly with Omagh Town before moving cross-channel to Norwich City (http://www.ex-canaries.co.uk/players/shields.htm) , although he doesn't seem to have made an impact before moving to the underage ranks at Peterborough. He broke in to the first team, seems to be a hard worker although getting very mixed reviews before being loaned to Stevenage Borough (http://www.stevenageborofc.com/content/previews/peterborough.shtml). Apparently homesickness brought him back to Derry City on a part time basis before Peterborough came calling again, and he played much of the 2002/03 season before a loan move to Aldershot came after a face to face with Barry Fry (http://www.nationwide.co.uk/football/common/SearchStory.asp?ID=61127) . He wanted to sign for Cork City but Fry tried to get one more game (http://www.nationwide.co.uk/football/common/divstory.asp?T_ID=div2&ID=67417&W=0) from him. Shields turned him down and is apparently returning home (http://www.nationwide.co.uk/football/common/divstory.asp?T_ID=div2&ID=67456&W=0)

...the internet is class when you're bored.:D

looks like a battler, mixed reviews about his ability, but could he be the player to support Georgie in midfield, and has he come as a Flynny recommendation, I'm sure we'll all be happy if it turns out as well as the last one John made ;)

Judging by the repeated bouts of homesickness that are mentioned on the net, I'd imagine he'd want to head up North. But maybe CCFC have already won the race, the Peterborough site mentions him going to us as though it was done and dusted.

Spoke to some Derry lads about this guy

The feedback is that he's a "battling" central midfielder - but they think he has played sometimes in defence as well.

He's probably a replacement for Conor O'Grady. He's certainly a similar type of player.

He was playing regularly for Peterborough up until last season. There was talk of him being homesick then, but Barry Fry managed to talk him into staying.

They don't think he ever actually played for Derry City at all.

according to yesterdays sun he has 120 games for posh under his belt, so the experience could be handy. sounds like he'd be a decent signing, considering we're so short of midfielders.

Spillane said he had agreed terms on the big red bench- might have known that meant we weren't getting him  That "journalist" has outdone himself again

On the same show he also said that Kevin Hunt has no intention of signing for us....;)

Let'e hope that he's not got something right for a change!!
