Folks can anyone advise me.
A guy is creating a website for me and has told me to buy a domain name.

How, what, where and when??

I've had a previous domain name through a web hosting company, is this the only way to go about it?

No, hosting companies mainly sell space for you to store your website on. Many of them offer domain names too, but you can buy those separately.

.ie is not the cheapest, but maybe you've a good reason to specify that. Anyway, here's the list of sellers:
