View Full Version : Strikers???

According to todays Echo, City are chasing yet another striker, in the form of Steve Burton, some 20 yr old Doncaster Rovers squad player, on a 6 month loan deal. He is being recommended by Sonny Sweeney, alomg with Robert Dickenson, another 20 yr old, who has just been released by Ipswich Town. he is a left sided or central midfielder.

Now, take interest in the mid fielder all we want, but we certainly dont need another striker do we? As things currently stand we have
Flynn
George
Doyler
Fenn
Behan
Colin P
Nolan
all competeing for 2 spots up front.

That said, Doyler is probably a winger now, and Fenn could well have been signed as a midfielder. If thats the case, well, yes sign another, as Behan, Colin P, and to a lesser extent, Nolan are not really up to the task.

What do ye reckon? I would be alot happier if we got a proven centre midfielder (esp that the cover that Grady can provide is gone to Londonderry) and a solid left full.

agree with you there that midfield is a priority,

do you think it'll be fenn or georgie going back to midfield.?? Personally think georgie, then use fenn to hold the ball up and johnny to make the runs...

Doyler will def play on the right wing...which leaves colin p, behan and nolan to fight it out for the supporting bench role..

we'll have doyler for the right...colin t can play there too...saying that colin t had a good season last, maybe he could play alongside georgie....combo a bit too lightweight maybe...

Positional options for next season:
----------------------------------------------
upfront: johnny, georgie, doyler, fenn, colin p, behan, nolan
midfield: georgie, doyler, kearney, colin t, nwánkwo, greg, benno, mucka
defence: murray, benno, hoggie, woods, coughlan, carey, greg, k. murray
keepers: devine, mooney, mcnulty

squad of 22.

Needed:
full back..left footed
midfielder: central midfield general..who can pass

A squad of 24 is as big as it should get IMO for financial reasons.

I think you're dead right there NOTL.

We can chalk Doyler and Georgie down as midfielders now i reckon. Our focus should definitely be someone who can break up opposition possession and pass the ball well. I wouldn't agree that Nolan isn't up to it, he's only a kid, he has pace and skill. He just needs to bulk up a bit, and that'll come naturally over a few seasons. I honestly can't see Colin P hanging around on the bench for too long.

colin p and behan are still just a couple of guys we should be getting rid of to reduce costs. in order to purchase proven centre field player.we have debated this all season. i dont know will goerge be answer he will need to be roaming man doing the fancy stuff creating chances 4 front two.
but if we give him to much responsibility he may give way loads of petulant free kicks.maybe greg and goerge can flourish together i certainly hope so. i think a good start this season is a must because the top 2 will be very wary of us this year and i hope they have reason to.........

Surely yuour being a bit unfair...
Nolan has done very well in the two games at the end of the season
Behan has always given 100%. He can be good even if he probably hasn't lived up to his potential yet.
All three are still barely 20!

What about the big hole in the centre of our defence?:D
How about getting someone to fill in the space currently taken by Derek?.... ;)

Well said. Cover in the middle and a left-back. Not that Woodsie doesn't do his best at left back, it's just that his natural attacking instincts leave us open to a ball in over the top. Btw, also heard that Dolan's supposed to be talking to Stevie Flynn.

To spout a cliché, I can't confirm or deny it. That's all I heard, simple as that.

At this moment in my opinion we need three players.A centre half possibly to play alongside Dan and making competiton better back there.Derek is not playing as well as he can but maybe the new season will be a better one for him(fingers crossed)..

Left back as i mentioned months ago and was abused on here for it.As Shed End John mentioned its not for the lack of trying but Woods is just not good enough back there..

Finally without going to much into it because we are all blue in the face from discussing it a central midfielder..

My targets would be the best in each position and why not.We are easily as big as any Dublin club so no inferior complex here.Get Hunt from Bohs if we can. Then head south and throw John Frost in the Taxi with him.Not sure about centre half yet.Possibly a recruit from England for this one me reckons..:ball:

pat has been talking to a buddy of my brothers about bringing him over on loan from aston villa for the season.his name is kevin mulcahy.he plays left back and is meant to be quite handy.hes from cork and hes been with villa for a couple of seasons now.he used to play for douglas hall.
hes only about 18 and has played for ireland since under 14s.

I'm not fully sure that we need someone for centre back. Benno was playing good stuff there up until he got sent off and never really managed to get back into the team once Derek came along. I reckon if him and Dan were the centre back pairing then it'd be a solid enough partnership

Derek gets a bad time on here. He's not as bad as people ar making him out to be. I myself would have Benno in there but its a close call TBH. Poor old Benno has had some shocking luck and made bad mistakes a crucial times. Coughlan was good when he came in, although not outstanding or anything.

IMO the problem with Coughlan is not how he's playing (he's been average, not terrible) but the fact that himself and dan can't seem to play well together. Dan has got progressively worse playing alongside Derek IMO, and i think Benno is the best option. They had a good partnership going, and abit of bad luck wrecked it.

And the split vote on Derek goes on and on...
....we need a midfielder before the start of the season, and despite what Pat about people telling him what he needs, he of all people surely knows it too!

The vote is definitely split Niamh, but I reckon there is a majority for a Dan/Benno combination?

Dan/Benno all the way, sorry Derek biy you've had your time.

I hope Derek can prove me wrong next season but Big Dan was carrying him for most of last year, needs a big improvement to keep his place in the side, imo.

Yeah, Dan and Benno would without doubt be my preferred centre back pairing.

I have to agree, Derek wasn't even all that great imo the first time round, Hartigol took alot of the hear off him :)

Benno and Dan play football and thats what i'd prefer to see all the time.
