Crazy scores today.
McDowell shoots 61 after a 77 on day 1.
Irish amateur Lowry leads by 2 on -15 after a 62.
Harrington likely to miss the cut after finishing on -3.

Great tournament so far alright. A bit far away for me to go watching it in flesh so making do with the SKY commentary and coverage on TV. So far it hasn't been far off the level of obsequiousness displayed by Stuart Barnes in relation to praising the Munster Rugby team such is the reverence Irish golf fans seem to be held in by all the SKY team. Is it possible we actually are GREAT and it's not just HYPE? (I mean, it's not really like Ireland is a huge commercial market they need to tap-in to or anything..... maybe we're actually that good eh.)
Anyway back to golfing matters... Pete, I think that crazy statistical variance in scoring is, ahem, ahem, puke, "par-for-the-course" on especially links courses such is the difference in playing difficulty from one day to the next depending on the conditions. For example, it wouldn't be unusual to see roughly 37/38 stableford points win a local competition here one windy day, whereas on the next (albeit rare) nice day you'd expect to see roughly 44/45 win. I suppose that uncertainty adds to the excitement. By any measure though, 61 is a fantastic score. From an Irish viewpoint, hopefully Lowry can keep it going.
Through 16th Hole.
Shane LOWRY, Shane (am) -17
Robert ROCK -16
Johan EDFORS -15
Haven't watched that must myself so just switched on.
Lowry just retaken the lead with 2 birdies.

Been watching it all morning. He's played very well. Hope he can hang on. He just put his tee shot on the green on 17 and has a putt for birdie.
Has an amateur won on the European Tour before?
Rock & Lowry 3 shots clear on the last hole.

Lowry in pole position. In front of the green in 2. Rock gone right of the green.
Some approach show by Lowry.
To answer my own question above:
Pablo Martin-Benavides (2007 Estoril Portuguese Open) is the only amateur to win the European Tour to date.

Here we go again! This time he has to do it. What odds Rock chips in from the bunker? Some drama.
2nd playoff hole.
Great second shot by Lowry, Harrington-esque from last years Open Championship. He needs to calm down with less playing to the crowd.
Rock in the bunker off green with good lie but sand stuck to the ball.

Should have finished it off there. Have a feeling rock might do it on this hole:(

The longer it goes on the more you think Rock has it. Lowry keeps hitting wonder shots though. Great nerve fro both of them in fairness.

Both in the rough off the tee on the 3rd playoff hole. Great stuff to watch all the same.
Cowan arrived to jinx it. At least he is getting wet though.
Think its going to be a mistake more than a great show that wins it now.

Pressure on Rock now with this putt.
Edit: Too much pressure.:D

At last. Fair play to the fella.
Nice consolation of €500k cheque for Rock. He might not have his first win but has his biggest winnings.
I think that makes it 10 Irish wins on the European Tour in 2008 & 2009. Surely our most successfully sport.

Fair play to Lowry he held his nerve well could have fallen apart after he missed that putt on the 18th hole the first time around and the way he played the last couple of holes to even be in that position

Well done Shane, Son of the great Brendan Lowry, a very, very proud Offalyman today.

Yeah I was surprised Rock automatically got the first place cheque. I thought Lowry would have the option of accepting and voiding his amateur status in the process. Is that not what happened with Justin Rose when he got a Top 10 finish in The Open as an amateur?

No if you enter as an amatuer you're not entitled to any prize money, Rose turned pro after the Open

That's fairly rough. A half million would be rather nice to have in the back pocket.

His 2 year exemption on the main tour should give him plenty of chances to make more than enough to survive, add to that the sponsorship deals that should follow this result and I think the lad will do fine.

Yeah but I remember Rose had a very tough time adjusting to the pro game for the first couple of years and didn't do terribly well at all before he came into his own.

Missed something like 15 cuts in a row, but he was younger than Lowry and didn't have the level of amatuer competition experience that Shane would have.
He will probably look at how many invites he gets for this season as a means of making his decision. Someone was telling me he might get invite for the Open Championship as an amateur which he will not get as a pro which might have abearing on his decision.
I don't think the Walker Cup has as much prestige as it might have had in the past.

Played 2 as a pro, missed 2 cuts, it's not as easy as it looks.....
Hope he gets some good rounds in at the challenge tour event this week at Moyvalley.
Lowry well & truelly off the radar now which is probably a good thing.
WGC events could be tough on him unless he recovers some form.

I've just found out that he's only playing in the pro-am & to the actual event, oops....
Pete I don't think it's his form in truth, I just think the real pressure of being a touring pro & needing to make cuts probably hit him. He was under no pressure in Baltray

Glover wins it. -4. Fair play to him. I was listening to Des Cahill's show on Friday and somebody texted in who had €20 on Glover at 150/1. Des and the panel were laughing at him. He's the one laughing now.

Harrington's ability to find water when in contention comes to the fore again!!
Unforgiveable 2nd on 16, pitch out on to the fairway...oops overshoot and end up in deep rough with one foot in the bunker..tournament and a chance to make a huge statement by beating Tiger on his own patch, thrown away.

Harrington still in with a shout in the PGA. 2 shots behind Tiger. Not sure if he is with Tiger in the last pairing.
At least seems to have turned his season around after changing his swing.

Top class. Amazing that he birdied and Tiger bogeyed after Tiger had a better position after their tee shots. Better than Harrington's shot in the 2007 British Open.

Absolutely fantastic shot. What a feeling walking up the fairway after that. I think Dman's right that it was better than Harrington's in the Open last year. But in the category of Great Shots To Win Major Championships In The 2000s, I'm not sure if it edges out Shaun Micheel's shot to clinch the 2003 PGA, here she is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXmdmBViOi8
Nice to see an Asian winner, should be a huge boost to the global (or developed world at least) popularity of the game. Felt sorry for Harrington to see such a solid week be destroyed by ten minutes of madness. On the positives, three Irish in the top 10.

First Thierry Henry handles the ball twice so that France can go the World Cup then Tiger Woods gets caught having a 2 and a half year affair with another woman, so does anybody wanna take bets on what Roger Federer is gonna do to bring himself into the public eye???
