Biggest Irish panel ever earn FIFA badges
15 of the eircom League refereeing panel have been selected as FIFA referees and assistant referees for the forthcoming year – the biggest number ever selected from Ireland in one year.
14 referees and assistant referees were selected last year and the increased number is a huge credit to the eircom League panel. Ian Stokes – who is selected as a referee for the first time credits Ireland's progress in refereeing circles to the "greater fitness and increased professionalism" in the last number of years.
He, along with Dave McKeon, are selected as FIFA referees for the first time following the retirement from the panel of Hubert Byrne and John Feighery.
Stokes and McKeon, both 31, join 25-year-old Alan Kelly and 44-year-old Paul McKeon on the refereeing panel making it the youngest ever group of Irish referees on the FIFA panel.
Paul McKeon will retire at the end of the year (FIFA referees must retire at 45), though Stokes

You seem to think this is a good thing.
If you were really interested in improving relations between fans/clubs and refs and the standard of refereering, you would be looking to get rid of this incompetent clown and his ilk.

i've argued in Paul McKeon's favour before, i won that argument and i don't think therees a need to go through all that again.
he is one of the best referees this country has produced.

Were you arguing with the man in the mirror?
You certainly didn't win anything that I can remember.
But, I'll play along with you.
Paul McKeon is a thoroughly incompetent, below standard referee.
Full stop.
I guess I won the argument....
think about it..
can you ever win an argument with a referee?
:)

that may be true, but when you look at the competition its hardly a compliment. its like telling someone they're "less than a complete idiot, more like (just) an idiot"

Irish Referees have consistently been given European appointments at levels that Eircom League clubs can only dream about. FACT!

Maybe a fact, but they can hardly have been selected based on their league performances. Typical of ref's - only concerned about themselves, not the way they bring the league down...

Good to see that Kelly the Athlone ref didnt make the list. Hes reffed two of our games in the last two seasons (we lost one and drew one cos of him) well i would say that wouldn't i??? well others thought it too and he got suspended for two weeks both times :) Honerable mention too to your man Sutton of Clare, those two are the worst ever!
