Dundalk beat Zurich in the home leg, not the away one.
But still were the first LOI club to win a European Cup tie:cool:

I haven't seen a few of the games already mentioned but they would have to very good just to come close to Shels V Split.

I would have swapped all Euro glory for Drogheda to knock out Kiev.

No Dundalk won the away leg 2-1 Cross and Hasty scored. They lost the home leg 3-0.

Hit the crossbar when 2-0 up in the away leg too!

An often overlooked result was Derry beating Locomotive Sofia 1-0 in the Brandywell.

My mistake you're right about the away leg.

I don't think they played the home leg at Oriel.

Dalymount if I remember correctly but definitely Dublin anyway.

I can't believe people are citing InterToto Cup games...

Why not? The thread title is "Best LOI games in Europe", it was a great game....

Sheridan may be referring to the fact that UEFA awarded zero (0) points to InterToTo games. It was considered a qualifier to Europe much the same as domestic football. It started in the 1960's as a private tournament amongst Central European clubs to continue football bets for bookmakers through the summer. Hence it's 'Lottery' style logo.
It was taken over by UEFA and offered as compensation to countries who had lost their Champions League place in the mid-1990's (1995 or 1996 definite time). LoI were one of a number of clubs who did not compete in the CL for a number of years.
UEFA quantified their RESPECT towards the competetion by the co-eff. points it awarded every single game.

Athlone Town 1983. versus Standard Liege. 2-3 (H), 3-8(A). Five goals in the European Cup campaign. Wasn't bettered for over a decade.
And an avalanche of goals to the desert that was to follow.

The three Dublin sides in 1984 was probably the best performance where everyone were knocked out. Linfield 0-0 Shamrock(Wed?), UCD 0-0 Everton (Wed.) and Bohemian 3-2 G. Rangers (Tues) would be considered one of the better legged results.

Similar to CL Cork City 2-1 Cwybran (late winner) and Shels 3-1 Karpaty L'vov. But sides overcame the opposition and played a more established team as the prize in the next round. Galatasaray and Panathinaikos respectively.

Yeah thats true
many , myself included, made a nice tidy profit betting for Derry in both legs of this tie. It wasnt such a shock, the only shock in it was that Derry scored so many goals

Derry didn't win the home leg! I remember looking at the game and thinking Derry would be about 2/1 or 9/4 over there - when I saw 5/1 I couldn't believe it! I tried to get a price on Derry to qualify but wasn't quoted one.

I ended up only having something like €25 @5/1. I did however have an each way bet on sunbed Kelly to score 1st at 40s - popped up with the 2nd so I actually won more on that bet than the match betting!

It's great that everyone's coming up with all these memorable games but don't forget there's only one LOI team with a 100% record in Europe! :D

Congrats.
You played one game in Connemara. Maybe Lygnby (sp?). I listened to the second half on Radio na Gaeltachta (sp?).

I wouldn't describe Luxembourg, Iceland or Poland as real powerhouses of European football...
If you want to get picky, Ireland would be in there too as being something less than a powerhouse. Besides, the first two were emphatic wins (very rare), while the latter is regarded as Polish football's worst ever result in Europe.

The explanation for me citing InterTwoBob results is quite straightforward: I've much happier memories of that competition than I have of relegation play-offs. :D
