PFA Players' Player of the Year contenders:

Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Ryan Giggs (Man Utd)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd)
Edwin van der Sar (Man Utd)
Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd)

PFA Young Player of the Year contenders:

Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa)
Jonny Evans (Man Utd)
Stephen Ireland (Man City)
Aaron Lennon (Tottenham)
Rafael da Silva (Man Utd)
Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

I'm a United fan but the list for the senior awards are surprising. Van der Sar had a long run without conceding but had to do very little. Giggs is only there because he's never won it and has played better than expected this season. He hasn't played nearly enough PL games to be considered anyway. Ronaldo is top of the goalscoring charts but then so is Robinho. Neither should have been considered this time imo. Ferdinand missed a nice part of United's record breaking run and for me the only United player who is there on merit is Vidic, who should win it I think. Gerrard deserves to be there and Torres would be only for missing so much. Rafael hasn't played enough to be considered for the Young player either despite his promise. Ashley Young and Agbonlahor should feel hard done by that it's not the senior players their names appear in. Jagielka, Barry, Petrov, Anelka, Matt Taylor, Dempsey, Danny Murphy, Hangeland, Alonso and even Carlton Cole would be higher on my list than most of those United canditates. The voting took place before United's dip in form as well so that would explain it a bit.

Ferdinand and Van Der Sar shouldn't be nominated and should be replaced by Jagielka and Hangeland in my opinion.

Winners will be Vidic and Ireland.

I think Vidic would be a worthy winner but have a feeling Stevie G might pip him for some reason.

Agbonlahor or Ashley Young have been fantastic and I would choose one of them for the young player from that list. Stephen Ireland is the bookies favourite alright though.

Depends when exactly the votes were cast. Judging by the shortlist it was bang in the middle of United's clean sheet run. This award tends to go to whoever was getting the most press at the time of voting as footballers are generally impressionable sorts so I'd say Vidic will take it. Young for the Young Player.

What are Ronaldo, Giggs and Van der Sar doing there? They have totally ignored anyone out of the top 4 it seems.

Jagielka, as mentioned, should definitely be nominated.

Lescott has also had another excellent season.

Mathew Taylor has been outstanding.

Gareth Barry has been another consistent performer after it looked like a difficult season for him.

Schwarzer has been the best keeper by miles.

Hangelaand has been rock solid and kept both United and Arsenal at bay.

Lampard has had another great season, no disputing his consistency now.

if you were gonna pick a Liverpool player then it should have been Alonso. Ireland should win young player of the year but will lose out to Young. Players like Kevin Davies often get overlooked because they don't play for a sexy club.

Slips had to be submitted early March but the writers have until May to submit their picks. Don't forget lads Man Utd won the treble back in 99 and didn't win any individual awards so its importance is debatable.

Coral have apparently suspended betting on this today as money was pouring in on Ryan Giggs in the Manchester area. Quite conceivable that word could have leaked out as the voting has already taken place. He was previoulsy third favourite, apparently his odds on Betfair have gone right down as well. Don't think he deserves it well and all has he has played this year, it seems to be just a career vote.

Yes and Paul McGrath before that. Liam Brady the only other Irish player to win it.

We have never had an Irish player win the young players award, and won't this year either, regardless of whether SI wins it or not!!!

Giggs was the sentimental vote, I suppose it applies more to Ashley Young

i'm a big ryan giggs fan he has been a special player over the last 15 years or so .. but even i cant justify him winning player of the year award .. he has only played 12 games this season :confused: would have chosen vidic myself

He's STARTED 12 but he's played in 24 league games regardless I would have chosen Vidic this year.

Giggs deserved to win it at least once, he should have won it around the time David Ginola won.

Doesn't matter he wasn't player of the year this season. Makes a mockery of the award. Either do it right or not at all.

Vidic or Gerrard for me.

I'd have given it to Timmy Cahill myself... A superb player, classy touch, great stamina, a superb header of the ball and always gives 100% to the cause. This season he has been world class, moving from midfield into attack to make up for Everton being caught short in terms of attackers.

I think he's a wonderfull player, seems to get better every season and I wonder why, with the greatest respect to Everton, a bigger club hasn't gone in for him. It's a shame things never panned out for us before the world cup in 2002 (he was pretty desperate to play for us - he was even going to take FIFA to court to be allowed to play for us) as he would have been our best player in the current squad.

He's an unpopular player. No big deal. Is this really the thing to tip you over the edge to say "What has football become at all"

Jonny Evans- 2nd, Agbonlahor-3rd........was it?

Like it or not Bella, Stephen Ireland is a very unpopular player at the moment. I'd bet that not one Irish player voted for Ireland due to his continued absence and as well as that i'd say every English player voted for another English player.
