Rumours doing the rounds last night that Waterford played a suspended player in their opening match against Fingal?

If so will Fingal be awarded the extra 2 points - the match was a draw?

Last season when Athlone were supposed to have played an unregistered player against Watereford - the full points were awarded to Waterford, though the case was later overturned on appeal.

Has this rule been changed since in the new participation agreement?

What are the chances 3 Shels fans heard the same rumour?

Rule is that result is changed to 3-0 defeat for "offending" team

No doubt we'll find out soon nough if it happened

I read after last seasons fiasco that its put down as a 3nil defeat points docked from the offending team rather than handing the advantage to the other team involved.

The fiasco last season wasn't the punishment. it was the fact that the decision was overturned

I don't think its true. This was on our fans website about a week ago and it was cleared up that the player in question was sent off in a munster senior Cup game and is to miss the next game in that competition and not a league match. However you'd never know with the League of Ireland!

The only outstanding First Team Suspension listed in the League Email was Willie John Kiely - who did sit out the Fingal game

what trevy said is right, there was word of it, but was cleared up that he serves the suspension in the same competition! if we'd be knocked out though, then it'd be carried over to the next league match i think.

Thing in todays Sun about it, the disciplinary committee having meeting Wednesday to discuss matters.
Fingal to be awarded a 3-0 win and the 3 points.

Looking at the list of suspensions, his name was not there, and therefore Waterford were not informed of the suspension, the FAI are to blame here and to penalise Waterford is a joke.

That list is just for public and press etc.

That list is just for public and press etc.

Every club receives a seperate fax for each suspended player in their club with reasons attached for suspension and you then have three days to reply in writing if you so wish.

But shouldn't his name still have been on the list anyway?

It was on it already from a carry over from last season further down.

But shouldn't his name still have been on the list anyway?

It is only a press release so it could be easily missed in error.

Clubs receive a list of suspensions as do the press and the clubs.

There was a definite omission last week on the suspensions list but the player in question didn't play as it was an automatic suspension

It was on it already from a carry over from last season further down.
If it was on it already then notification was made

He was on it yeah. Will the Athlone points being taken back on appeal set a precedent for this though? And I wouldn't understate the role of John Delaney in helping Waterford out either. If it turns out Waterford do lose points over this, someone at the club should be handing in their resignation. Idiots.

Is there a difference between red card and yellow card suspensions as to whether they are carried out at underage or senior. Say if a player gets sent off in the last game of the Under 20s league and then is overage the following season and is promoted to the first team does the suspension carry over or just die seeing as the player turned 21 at the start of the season

Will the Athlone points being taken back on appeal set a precedent for this though?

Depends on the reasons for points deduction in the 1st place.

but that was for a build up of yellow cards from last season.
the problem arising now is kieran fitz from his sending off in the Munster Senior cup. I still think he should serve that suspension in the same competition, unless the club are knocked out!

and athlone only got back the point last year because there was a waterford man on the committee that decided it, who absteined due to being a waterford man, but the decision was scrapped because they all must vote, or something like that:D

The first press release of the season has a FIFA automatic suspension on it and its not Kiely

From The Fingal Independent

Sporting in line for major points bonus
Sporting Fingal could be on course for a 3-0 victory this week and that is before they even face Finn Harps in Morton Stadium on Friday night.

A controversy has arisen out of the opening league game of the season following the emergence that Waterford United fielded a player who had been sent off the previous week in a Munster Senior Cup tie.

The player in question, Kieran Fitzgerald, was introduced as a sub for Waterford United in the 57th minute of the league game against Sporting Fingal, which was played in the RSC on March 7th.

Waterford scored their opening goal in the 87th minute while Sporting equalised through Philip Byrne just one minute later.

Fitzgerald was sprung from the bench just 12 minutes into the second half when the game was still scoreless and so had quite a significant contribution to proceedings.

According to section 113 of the official rulebook there are specific guidelines for dealing with suspensions pertaining to league and FAI cup games. However, where a player has been sent off in any other official FAI competition then he must serve his suspension in the next available fixture.

In this case the next fixture was the league game with Sporting Fingal in which Fitzgerald made an appearance.

When contacted about the incident the communications department of the FAI stated that the matter had now been referred to the Disciplinary Commission of the body.

'As the matter is now with this body, the FAI cannot make any further comment at this time,' stated Eoghan Rice of the FAI.

The disciplinary commission will now meet tomorrow night ( Wednesday) in Abbotstown to discuss the matter and if they find that Fitzgerald should have been suspended for the Sporting game then the Fingal side could have the three points awarded to them as well as a mandatory 3-0 scoreline.

While aware of the matter Sporting Fingal's club secretary John O'Brien was steering clear of any discussion on the topic. 'As far as we are concerned this is a matter for the Disciplinary Commission and Waterford United and our focus is purely on the field of play,' remarked O'Brien.

i thought the munster senior cup was run by Munster Football Association and not an FAI competition though

Good to see that common sense prevailed!!! Would have been ridiculous to have a player suspended for a league game even though he was sent off in a minor competition especially since Waterford are still in the MSC!
