Late Molloy goal seal Town win
Monaghan United 0-1 Athlone Town
A goal from Athlone striker Eric Molloy two minutes from time gave the midlanders victory over ten-man Monaghan United at Century Homes Park on Sunday afternoon and ensure the perfect end to a promising First Division campaign for Jimmy Greene’s side.
Despite finishing in ninth place of the twelve sides in Division One, Athlone put in an excellent second half to the season, and if they can keep hold of Molloy, Martin Reilly and Padraig Moran, they could be dark horses for the top four next season.
Second from bottom Monaghan had goalkeeper Vladimir Munteanu sent off to compound the misery of a disappointing end to their season - they were without a win in the last nine games of the campaign, and won just three of their 33 games all season.
