View Full Version : The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses eponymous debut album was released 20 years ago in May.
I thought I'd take the liberty of starting a thread for all things Roses related - if there's no interest, it will die off of its own accord.
The inevitable cash-in seems to be at an already advanced stage with a John Leckie re-mastered version due to be released to coincide with the 20th anniversary.
Its rumoured that there may be some previously unreleased additional demo tracks added to the final box set release.
Years ago I heard the demo of "The Sun Still Shines" which didn't make the album - and it wouldn't have appeared too out of place on the finished album.
I'd be a bit dubious as to how much of any real worth is left as Silvertone would have released it years ago.
One last thing - here's a decent site for any Roses fanatics:
http://www.thisisthedaybreak.co.uk/
The Sun Still Shines is a great song and is still only available as a bootleg. It'd be worth another version/ box set just for that song, which could be why it's been held in reserve. There's also a couple of cool acoustic demo's.
I remember when the Very Best Of was out, they said they had turned down the bass on the original recordings as, so I wouldn't write off a remastered version just yet, although much of it already on The Very Best Of.
According to the NME article last month the album is expected to be released some time in June - typical of them.
My album is starting to skip, so I'm nearly due to buy yet another one. I'll probably just pick up the standard one, and see what comes of the box set.
I like this site, a detailed Discography:

Got into them relatively late and there's a question i've always wanted to ask... How come the singles So Young, Sally Cinnamon, What the World is Waiting For, One Love etc didnt make a studio album rather than a compilation.... Was it record company strife?

Remember being at a house party years ago and throwing them on
I'd have been about 24 at the time and this group of 20 year olds started asking who they were and then started going on about if I knew any more really good underground bands :eek:

So Young and Sally Cinnamon were released well before the album, and were pre-Mani too. (So Young is a world away from a band that has found it's sound).Fool's Gold/What the world is waiting for was released after the album, later that year, and One Love the next year. It was around the time their troubles started with Silvertone.
They probably wouldn't have been put on a studio album anyway - this was still at a time where it wasn't strange to release non-album singles/e.p.s. Elephant Stone was another non-album single, released before the album.
All the other single releases/re-releases after the album, up to Love spreads, were just Silvertone cashing in.

Silverstone really have milked them dry, just how many compilations are there now??
I reckon this will be at least the 4th!!
Slightly O/T, I have a policy of buying classic albums for Nieces & Nephews, for their 18th Birthdays (I have 11 N&N's!!) it's always from the year of their birth so far there have been 4 lucky recipients
1982 Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
1985 Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush
1986 The queen is dead - The smiths
1989 The stone roses - The Stone Roses
Of the 4 only the Stone Roses one has had any impact, the other 3 were soon on the bottom of the CD pile, in my defence I purposely went for albums to challenge their normal tastes, eg The Smiths was for my Nephew who is big into Chilli Peppers, Linkin Park type of stuff.
This year another nephew hits 18 so it's classic album from 1991 time...
He likes Hip Hop & Rap so I'm tempted by Ice T's OG but my heart says Primal scream - Screamadellica

According to research (http://foot.ie/showthread.php?t=96532) Nevermind was the bast album of that year. But go with Screamadelica. Or Loveless.
You're right about Silvertone - one of the reasons I'm finding it hard to get enthusiastic about this. Not messing with the classics is another. Although, to be fair it might be interesting to hear it re-mastered by John Leckie.

Cheers for that one mate. Was always confused as to why there was a two year period of releasing singles from the first album and non album tracks!

Yeah - even though the recording is only a Demo - Sun Still Shines is a catchy Roses tune in the mould of Mersey Paradise , Suger Spun Sister etc. It certainly precedes John Squires purhcase of the Led Zep song book.
Two other additional recordings from the 88 / 89 Sessions have been released. "I'm without Shoes" and "Groove - Black Magic Devil Woman".
Both appeared as limited edition releases on the Complete Stone Roses Compilation.
"I'm without Shoes" is one of their "backwards" recordings and "Groove" is pretty much the band jamming as oposed to a formal song (some good guitar work by John Squire in it though).
Both tracks are more for completists and/or Roses Anoraks only!!!
All the other single releases/re-releases after the album, up to Love spreads, were just Silvertone cashing in.
Silvertone released "Waterfall" as one of these additional cash-in singles. What amazes me is that "Where Angels Play" was the previously unreleased B-Side!!!!
I was never sure if WAP was not considered good enough for the eponymous album or whether it was being held back for the aborted 1990 / 1991 album!!!
Imagine how good that album would have been if they'd kept up the momentum!!

If you don't buy him A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory I will
:p
Seriously though if he likes hip hop and is just 17 he probably won't have that one and it's one that he will quickly realise is an essential listen

The best album from that year, (for me - any year), is U2's Achtung Baby, but then alot of households already have that album.

I'm pretty sure Leckie already remastered songs for The Very Best Of. For completeness, I probably will get it (or have it got for me). If they have, and then put out some of the demo's talked about early as an extra, I'll definitely get it (to replace my tape bootleg :) )
Chopping a song in half to make it fit (I can't think of any other reason) on the best of was a very sore point for me.
This is probably something I'll get round to getting, but I need to get the original album first.

Short versions have always annoyed me. Mind you, didn't The Complete even have a short version of Resurrection? Now that compilation really was a waste of time...

Was it a single version? (They tend to do that on a lot of Best Ofs..)

It was one of the aforementioned Silvertone milking exercises. The short version of that and Fools Gold always wrecked my head, whatever about One Love (which at least was released before the row).

Yep. "I am the Resurrection" was indeed a milking excercise and a single that was unauthorised by the band. The drum track was altered and the instrumental cut for radio play. Sacrilege.
The short version of Fools Gold (4.15) is in fact the original single version from 1989. There's a subtle difference in the songs arrangement in comparison to the longer version also.
"One Love" and "Somethings Burning" received an unceremonial edit on the cash in "Complete Stone Roses" in '95.
The 1991 released "Turns Into Stone" is worth having as it includes many of the B-sides plus longer versions of One Love and Somethings Burning.

Yes, but on an album called The Complete Stone Roses it wasn't on!

Agreed the short version of IATR totally misses the point of the song , Absolute travesty
Just listened to "This is the One" sounds as ecstatic and life affirming as ever

Its a good album just too riff driven when compared to the grove quality of "The stone Roses". Its easy hear Squire's increasing dominant influence of alot of the songs.

Maybe because I've overplayed the debut throughout the years but my favourite Stone Roses tracks come from Second Coming

My brother just rang me with this fantastic news bout half an hour ago. Am so excited I could burst!!!! Oh please let them play Dublin or Belfast!!!
Oh my god, am gonna hyperventilate. Never got to see them when they were here before for one reason or another (one being heavily pregnant with my now 14 yr old son) and it has been my biggest let down in life. Been to see Ian almost everytime he has been here and regularly go see the Complete Stone Roses but cant wait for the real thing.

Yeah but this story come out every 5 years or so same with the Smiths. Ian Brown hated John Squire ever since mid nineties, I've heard things have chilled slightly between them in last few years but can't see Brown being able to stick with squire for a tour or time to record an album. Plus Brown seems to be happy enough doing his solo stuff

Dont do this. Dont crush my hopes and dreams.

I saw them 14 years ago in Cork, and while it may not have been the biggest let down in life, it was right up there.
I consoled myself with the fact that I got to see them (or most of them, anyway). The '96 reviews seem to be a lot worse, and there's always a danger that any reunion won't improve on this.

Great to hear but I'd like to know more detail of the proposed re-union. It doesn't seem to add up.
Ian Brown is currently recording an album and will most likely be touring it. John Squire has 3 art exhibitions, Mani is commitments to Primal Scream.
Have Brown and Squire reconciled to any degree, for instance?
Will the band properly rehearse a set to avoid another '96 calamity?
A litany of questions to be answered before this would have a chance of working out.

This story comes out most years, purely coincidentally right around Festival Ticket Sales time...
I was in Cork, and saw them a couple of times in the following tour, and I thought they were pretty tight tbh. Cork in particular was amazing, but then that could've been the occasion. The live ep from there sounds alright too though.
I'm not sure what's in it from Ian really. He has a successful solo career. I would go, as it can work (the Mondays first comeback in 99 showed it could), but I don't really see it (for the moment anyway).
