UCD win Collingwood Cup with victory over NUI Galway

UCD 1-0 NUI GALWAY

ROBBIE Creevy who plays his club football with Shamrock Rovers scored the golden goal that won UCD the Collingwood Cup, Irish Universities soccer championships at the Mardyke in Cork on Friday. UCD chalked up their second Collingwood triumph in three years when they beat Galway to confirm their tag as pre-tournament favourities in this year's inter-varsity series in the southern capital. The Students last won the title back in 2007 when DCU hosted the week-long football festival and next year the University of Ulster at Jordanstown will stage the event in Belfast.

Galway who last won the title over a decade ago and played one less game than UCD after receiving a first round bye felt hard done by the end. They had genuine claims for a penalty waved away with 20 minutes to go and then seven minutes for time they had 60th minute substitute Eoin Duffy sent off on a second yellow by Cork match official Gene Stephens. UCD had the benefit of an early goal when young striker Creevy saw a delicate 25-yard chip float up and over Galway 'keeper Jonathan Burke and dip into the net just under the crossbar.
