View Full Version : Television coverage of the league
Anyone know what was the first national league match to be shown live on television?
The first one I remember seeing was the FAI Cup final in 1996 with Shels and Pats...
Any takers?

can't think of specific examples, but I'm sure the FAI cup final has been shown live even further back than that.
AFAIK FAI Cup finals alwasyt been shown live on tv in my lifetime anyway.
I'd be surprised if any live league games before the 90's.
First live Cup final was Pats v Rovers in 1967. First league game (AFAIK) was Shels v Derry in about April 1997. RTE moved it to a Saturday 3pm kick off

Yeah, Dodge is right. I remember George Hamilton goin on about how it was the first League game ever to be televised live, a new era for the league and all that!
I wonder how many league games been televised live so far?
This things about showing semi fianls live seems to only be recent thing too.
City league games live:
City 1 Pats 2
Pats 1 City 0 (title decider)
City 1 Shel$ 2
City 1 Derry 0 (around new year 2001?)
2002/2003 Shel$ 1 City 0 (Bohs won title)
Got to be a few more - i've terrible memory...
