PLAYING FOR THE SHIRT……………..THE WEBSITE

In 2007 Playing for the Shirt was released in book format as a fund raiser for Glentoran Football Club youth and reserve teams and to celebrate 125 years of the Glentoran playing kit. The book sold out in less than a month.

The idea was to research, catalogue and re-create graphically every single shirt worn by Glentoran Football Club since the club’s formation in 1882.

Each shirt was un-earthed by trawling through newspaper archives, film footage, photographs owned by individuals, supporters clubs and Glentoran FC. Some playing strips were also discovered through anecdotal evidence from former players, journalists and historians.

In many instances down through the decades there have been multiple variations of one shirt and this has made the task of designing and researching each jersey even more painstaking. Even since the production of the book more shirts and stories have come to light.

These shirts provide a chronological history of a football club from Belfast and so the book’s authors decided to create a website to tell the story of the Glens to a worldwide audience.

We are now delighted to be able to launch playingfortheshirt.net As another resource for Glentoran supporters in particular and football fans in general from all over the world.

Each shirt will no doubt evoke individual memories for the reader.

Hopefully the site will expand to cover football programmes produced by Glentoran through the years, programmes and tickets from European competition, an on-line photo gallery containing photographs of the club amassed through the years and selected articles from the back catalogue of the Glentoran Gazette.

Happy browsing.

Website looks the part. Some truly awful shirts though, although this one isn't bad...

Not quite sure how a shirt like that would go down these days at the Oval. :D
