Club by a short head. I do love going to Lansdowne Road and watching the boys in green on TV as well.

Despite being a rabid Celtic fan, it's my country first, every time. I'm sure many other 2G would see it the same way.

Then again Celtic aren't an Irish club.

Will give Celtic a right shout against Bayern tonight, though, especially given what's at stake for them.

Club, club, club all the way. As a great Hoop once said, "I'd rather see Rovers win a corner than Ireland win the World Cup" Simple as that!

Like that's any way intelligent.
Naturally, we're all going to feel THAT bit closer to our club because being from Cork, Dublin or wherever we see our club as being THE representative of our city, town or region. However, it's hardly fair to discount/forget the huge part that international football (the Country) has played in ALL our lives over the past 15 years or so. It is in fact something I could NEVER see myself doing, which is why I'll cheer Ireland on as well as my beloved City.

What's that supposed to mean? Shamrock Rovers give me a sense of belonging and have done for all my life whereas Ireland and the legions of muppets who follow them mean nothing to me. It's a matter of opinion and damn all to do with intelligence.

I've had similar conversations with other football fans who accused me of being unpatriotic but they soon shut up when I asked them did they follow the Irish cricket/badminton/tiddlywinks teams.

Club for me. For the week to week action there is nothing better. However I do enjoy going to lansdowne to see Ireland play.

I agree with WE Are Shams on this one. Rovers give me a sense of belonging more then going to lansdowne Rd to see Ireland play

Only a fan of the other SRFC would get away with that. :)

Lets not start this again but yes you would be expected to support your country over a foreign team

Like the 2G irish,I don't feel I belong to any particular part of Ireland, but Ireland as a whole becos the oul pair are from Waterford and Kildare,so it's natural to just feel irish.

Maybe it's different if all your roots are in a particular region then maybe you feel more apart of that than of the country as a whole.

However, the players of a club will move if a more lucrative offer is available to them but your countries players are their for the duration of their playing career.

Club. Yeah I'd celebrate if Ireland won the world cup but I don't get depressed after each loss.

Pats on the other hand control my life...

Then again I don't support an eL club. I've tried games at the Showgrounds, Terryland Park and St. Mel's Park (all being local to various branches of my family in Ireland) but - although enjoying each - came away unscathed by attachment.

As for the can of worms you mention, John? The lid can stay on - I haven't seen Silvio in these parts for weeks, and he's the one with the can opener. ;)

For the duration of their playing careers? Gary kelly, Dean Kiely, Roy, Shearer, etc.? But that's another can of worms.

Anyway, for me, it's club football by a mile. Then again, I'm not particularly patriotic.

Club.

Hard to get too worked up about 4-5 International games a year compared with 40 odd club games.

I guess the FAI realise that many people will chose club over country and are trying to create a club like atmosphere at Lansdowne with the section dedicated to eL fans. Personally I have to go with my club. As others have said on here, their club is a better representation of who you are than the national side. The Irish teams display in Switzerland left me numb. I didn't care any more because it seemed that the players didn't either. Following Celtic I can honestly say that I have never felt like that....in the post Viduka era anyway

Could be because they don't represent your area.

Everytime Pats fans sing about Inchicore my pride swells (settle down all you schoolkids...) Everytime a news report takes about celebrations in mcDowells, the same thing. I think it also helps being so close to the players. Having a drink with one of your idols definitely beats the TV stars from the national team

Its country for me, if one of the drogs got the the call (any minute now) I think Id be happier watchin him play for Ireland than agianst another eL (yes, safe atlast) team. I think that if we were more successfull internationally the tide might turn.

Conor, you talk too much... :)

Its natural for Cork City fans from Cork to have more affinity with the team than Kerry people, just like Man U fans from Manchester... In no way am I saying you're not a proper Cork fan, just that on this point of club v country, its natural tha locals have more of an emotional attachment to their local club side...

If an eL team was set up in your local Kerry town and became moderately succesful, would you start supporting them? Just wondering

Rebel Bhoy

Then I suppose Dodge you are getting into the whole argument about changing clubs. If the whole thing about Wimbledon going to Dublin had come to fruition, then would folk from Dublin have stopped supporting their respective eL clubs, or indeed Man Utd, Liverpool, etc because they would be a 'Dublin club'? I am not so sure they would have.
I hope not to change the focus of this discussion away from club Vs country too much but I was born are reared in North London but have always followed Celtic my reasoning is that Celtic are a club that represent (to me) the Irish diaspora of which I am a part far more than Tottenham or Arsenal ever could, even in spite of the large numbers of immigrant support that these two clubs attract.

Club for me. Nothing like going to matches week in week out and supporting the team.

I love Lansdowne too but it has to be Club first.

There's no way they would have... but then thats bringing something into an area where football already exists. Not the same as in Conor's case...

I guess you are right but there is still the whol thing of changing allegiances. I'm a bit uncomfortable with that. Did you hear about the two brothers, one supported Man Utd and the other Man City. The City fan needed a bone marrow transplant and the brother was a match. he would only give it up if the city fan subscribed to MUTV and pledged allegiance to United!!

I think a lot of european countriers have people who travel to International games & then club supporters. Holland & to a lesser extent maybe Italy are good examples. It doesn't mean the two don't meet but people tend to be one or the other...
