Can anyone explain the basics of how to start using torrents to me please?
I'm alright with computers but I've never used torrents before. (obviously I won't be using them for anything illegal).
Thanks.

You download a client (I use utorrent.)
You make sure all the relevant ports are open (portforward.com will help there.)
You download your torrent file from your chosen website.
You open your torrent in your client, set it a priority rating, download limit or upload limit (or just accept the default) and wait. That's about the size of it.

I'm being dense but where do I actually find these? Google for what I want?

This might help explain also:

Did you know that about one third of all of the data flying across the internet at any given point is being sent by an application called BitTorrent? You may not even know what it is, because previously it has mainly been used for illegal nefarious purposes, but now it's hitting the mainstream, and once you try it you'll never know how you managed to live without it.
