Hi lads.
I am looking forward to tomorrow. Unfortunately I can't make it
down, but I'll keep in touch somehow.
I was just wondering what kind of a team will ye have out tomorrow ?
As regards us, this is our first friendly, so I presume we will have a full bill
of health. Also what kind of a crowd will be at the game, is anyone
going ?
Oh by the way, what's the ground at Bishopstown like. I know it's only ye're training ground, but if anyone had a photo post a link.

It'll be mostly trialists for us including a Brazilian capped at U-14, U-15, U-16, U18 & U-20.
Paul Doolin will take charge of a Cork City team for the first time tomorrow as City face Waterford United at Bishopstown in the club’s first pre-season friendly of 2009.
The City boss has a number of players on trial, and will use the opportunity to see them in action. Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Doolin said it was unlikely that the majority of players contracted to the club would play much of a part in tomorrow’s game: “I have so many guys in here on trial at the moment that the players currently under contract at the club are unlikely to play a huge part in the game. We have a small squad, and we do not want to risk injuries to the lads we have here, while at the same time I want to take advantage of the opportunity to have a proper look at the players who have been training with us in a match situation. There is no point in throwing a guy on for five minutes at the end of a game if you are trying to asses him, so the likelihood is that the trialists will feature very strongly tomorrow. It’s very difficult to judge players when you are in training, even though we did play a training match this morning, but you really have to look at them in a proper match situation.”
While the majority of the current squad are unlikely to feature to any great degree in the game, new signings Billy Dennehy and Dan Connor are both carrying knocks and are likely to be rested completely. Connor has a minor thigh strain, while Dennehy took a knock to his foot, and though they are not major concerns, Doolin is unlikely to risk them. The City boss also said that tomorrow’s result is not of any great consequence, but merely a useful exercise in his pre-season training: “Pre-Season friendlies are not particularly crucial, as the hard work, on fitness and so on, is done on the training pitch, rather than in the games, but sometimes players just want to play games too. You could win every friendly game you play and then have a poor start to the season, and on the other hand you could lose every pre-season game and then get off to a flyer, so the result is irrelevant tomorrow. The main purpose of friendlies is to get fitness and to ensure you are ready for the league when it begins.”

if anyone goes to the game tomorrow , can you have a look at Bolivian Player Carlos Alvarez who is trialing with Waterford , he'll be up front if selected, let me know how you rate him .

I didn't know Carlos Alvarez was training with us, I thought we were only linked with him.
Anyway, will there be updates from the game on here ?

City started with Mark McNulty in Goals, Sean Kelly at CB and nine trialists.
Very hard to judge the quality on show, the putch didn't make it easy.
Poor enough game, pretty scrappy on the whole, both sides looked like teams getting back into it, which is no surprise.
The winning goal was in the last minute, from a corner, Philpott in goals got both hands on the ball, took a small bumo and dropped it behind him where it was volleyed in.
A few trialists did OK and are worth another look, Latvian CB Mezeckis (?sp) was the stand out trialist for me, hopefuly we'll get to see him next to Dan Murray in the new year.
Freimanis (Latvian) on the right wing did pretty well, strong and willing to take a player on, I expect he'll be offered a contract too.
Gattering from Austria (left wing) delivers a great cross and dead ball, worked hard but the touch wasn't great, he's well worth a second look though.
Tacio from Brazil (centre mid) looked OK in spells, did all the simple stuff well.
Duggan (?) CM got stuck in well, but probably would be surplus to requirement if it's his best position.
Reid looked worth another shot , played CM, but I think he could do a job on the right.
O'Neill looked lively when he came on too.
Hard to judge any player on a single outing, but considering no one who would be expected to play in our first eleven on the first game of the season was playing, it was a decent run out and gave Doolin a lot to think about.

Shane Duggan, signed for us last July. Decent enough.

was it just a team of trialists? Is Doolin going give and of the younger players (21s &18s) a look in or are Cork City going to continiously wreck cork football by taking all our young talented players away from their clubs and not bring them through...
Remind me again where clubs like Everton, Rockmount and Avondale get their players from......!?
But you do have a point about them not being brought through......the fact is that in general the talent isn't there and these players should not be brought in!

thought freimanis chances of a trial at cork had gone with alan matthews departin.. but from seeing him in a few " unofficial" matches for us i would reckon he would do well for ye guys..

Yeah, Pat Sullivan is still here. The game was almost solely trial players. Freimanis really impressed, as did recently capped Latvian International Mezeckis at the back. Tacio has a great touch on the ball and I was very impressed by the ability of Silagalis (Latvian striker) controlling and holding up the ball. Also Gattering looks like he'll be dangerous from dead ball situations.

I just think that in general these players are better off being developed by their clubs until an older age and then maybe see if a few of them are good enough to make the step to eircom league. I cant see the benefit in putting them in the one team and have them hammer ever club they play every week. And i think avondale is the only team filled with former city players and thats because of Caufield.
Surely there is a few players in the current under 21 squad squad that should be given a chance. I havent been out to see them but im interested in hearing about it. Didnt one of them sign for sunderland last year? Can't remember his name but thats probably because he never played on the senior team..

What I as saying is that clubs like Everton get there players from smaller clubs. But I agree on the point of City making the league one-sided underage, but that's really the fault of football in this country, that there is not a proper national underage structure.
The guy you're thinking of is Dave Meyler, he'll be in action for Ireland U-21 in Turners Cross tomorrow night against Germany. He never got his game for City, but I think he's going to be a star in the future though.

He wasnt good enough for the senior teams. Came on as a sub a few times but had no hope of getting in ahead of the likes of Gamble and Healy

Wasn't good enough, but IMO would have been in time.

Probably, a bit like Shane long. but no LOI team can turn down that kind of money for someone who's not even in your first team yet.

True true. But he's going to be a top player I'd say.
