The Dark Knight has been voted for 8 oscars and yet it hasn't got a nomination for best picture, director or writing. I'm a little bemused by that or maybe I'm a little bias but surely it deserved one of them nominations!? Looking forward to the Oscars anyway even if they're a big elaborate ceremony where people can flaunt their egos...

I haven't seen any of the nominated films for those categories this year (well, In Bruges and WALL-E are up for best writing (original)), so I can't compare. Really, it comes down to taste. Films like The Dark Knight aren't as popular with the oscar voters as with the public. The voting systems are a little ecclectic too, so it could have been on many voters' shortlists without actually making the cut.
I guess you could argue for its nomination in any of those categories: directing in particular - I think Nolan will get one eventually.
Ultimately, the Oscars aren't that big a deal. Lots of good films have been overlooked over the years.
I've seen it argued elsewhere that WALL-E should be up for best film.

True there, de oscars can be over-rated and a bit elaborate at times. I'd like to see Nolan win an oscar sometime as he changed de whole Batman Franchise around. I think he gave it more depth and understanding. Also it plays into our fears of terrorism and the anti-hero. I'm glad Heath Ledger is nominated but I feel it would be a bit of a cop out if they gave him de oscar if de other actors were better. I have more respect for Film festivals like Cannes, Berlin and de like than de oscars. At least they could recognise Pulp Fiction.

The only good Batman was Batman and Robin. The rest suck. One of the best films out there that never won an oscar was Legally Blonde 2

I loved Wall-E. De amount of time and effort that went into that was unbelievable, de details, de story, de characters. It was a fantastic piece of filming, highlighting de most subtle of things Wall-E did into a story. Pixar are amazing, they've crossed de boundaries between animation and film.

And what about in 2006 Dreamgirls was the only film not nominated for Best Picture to receive the most nominations of that year

Well that was 2007 and the films that were nominated were of high standard but I'm not knocking Dreamgirls but I think The Dark Knight should be at least nominated in one of the categories I mentioned but then maybe I was too hopeful. Christopher Nolan will in time get his oscar and hopefully his brother will get recognition for his writing sooner or later.

very annoyed by TDK not getting a nom for best pic/director - i havent seen all the other films in those categories so i cant or wont judge them - but surely by the critical acclaim TDK has received from fans and critics and its phenomal success at the box office surely it deserved recognition in these categories. Very annoyed by it.
Or then again like you "two left boots" maybe im being a bit bias also

It should have gotten a best Picture nod. No doubt it was in top 5 movies of 2008.
