Just said it on Today FM sports news too. Shocked I am. Wonder will he be linked with Drogheda United now?

Doubt it. He wants a decent budget.

Anyone know why he's gone so close to the start of the season?
I think he did a great job last year, wanted him to come to us!

Given he was whining about his budget recently, saying it was impossible to run a team on it, I'd say money was the reason.

Potentially fair dues to the FAI here. If Cook was putting pressure on Sligo to put together an unrealistic budget, which the Sligo board gave and the FAI rejected, the FAI could well have saved Sligo from themselves.

He was told he was only allowed a squad of 14 players on the the budget he had and was not allowed to sign a reserve keeper. As for whinging about his budget what manager doesn't at all levels. I wish Cook all the best! Knocked for six with this one thought we could have had great season.

Do you think its the location thing with Sligo and managers ? They seem to changed quite a lot over thr past 15 yrs for eg.

Big surprise, def a big loss for Sligo this one.

ya it's the loacation. that's exactly the problem

The problem is rovers policy as a club to hire manager's in from the UK. These managers come over, do well (or dont) and then ship off when it suits them. always been the way and probably always will be.

Agree; it's primarily why we don't have Pete Mahon this year. But (a) he was whinging very publicly about it and (b) it's still the main reason he's gone, which was the question asked.

well in fairness, if you were in charge of a team in 5 competitions with 14/15 players wouldnt you be slightly concerned??

I'd be more wondering why I gave the players such high wages that my entire budget is gone on 14/15 players.

the club gave him a much higher budget, then the FAI rejected it, AFTER the lower budget had all been allocated, dont think you can blame the manager for that.

now if thats true its a bit ridiculous. Hope its not the end of him in the league, was actually looking forward to see how Sligo got on this season seemed to be going in the right direction.

I wouldnt be suprised if the MC, yet again, came to Cook with an even smaller budget than the reckoned €10k a week, and that was the final straw for Paul.

As for an 'entire budget on 14/15 players' i doubt Cook and Carr were foolish enough to do that knowing well Rovers would have a hectic season ahead.

There has been some amount of managerial changes this year.

Oh well bangs goes my theory that Sligo would finish higher than St. Pats or Galway United on the basis that they had a stable manager in place!

There has been some amount of managerial changes this year.

Only Kenny and Fenlon left from last years top six.
Between Bohs and Derry for the title given that both squads are pretty much intact from last season

Unlucky....no consolation to Sligo fans, but I really hope he stays in the league. He was fantastic, honest and very entertaining....but he wasnt just a bit of sideline entertainment, he is a quality manager that likes good football being played. His presence is only a benefit to the league.

Who would he go to though? Aren't Drogheda the only other premier club without a manager and if he didn't like the budget at Sligo he'll hardly like the one at Drogheda..

Was the best manager in the league in my opinion.
He was a breath of fresh air in the league and his influence on the league will be sorely missed come March and beyond.
I am truly shocked that he has left!

I thought Cook & Sligo could have done better again this year - they looked more stable than other teams & hes obviously a good manager - pity that he's gone - like others said, I hope he stays around the league
