Eleven-a-side are reporting (http://www.eleven-a-side.com/boysingreen/news.asp?n=35523) that Trap will name his squad for the Georgia game (Feb 11th) on Monday (Jan 19th) at a 10am press conference.

They're also saying that speculation is intensifying that Ireland will be in the squad.

Maybe the early announcement is so that people have time to discuss that without affecting the teams preparations too close to the game?

I'm making it my business not to get a buz of anticipation about any of his squads any more, after the last few.

Ireland (he will come back if called up this time)

Just curious why do you think that?

With Ireland as Trap has said " he know's the channels to use if he wants to contact the FAI " As it will be of no use naming him in the squad if he still will not play for us . Pick up the phone Ireland ........:ball:

Just a gut feeling , the lad messed up and I think the papers and media only made the matter worse. My pal lives in Manchester and he tells me alot about the stuff Ireland does for children's charities and that he is trying to set a centre up in Cobh..In other words he is not the spliot little monster people have made hi out to be..

We'll see what his attitude is like for the rest of the year.

You forgot Gibson in that squad. Delap wont be called up. Too old. Maybe Wilson might get a call up.

I'm making it my business not to get a buz of anticipation about any of his squads any more, after the last few.Yeah, me too. Same players over and over again despite the strong feeling that there are better players than those selected in some positions.

In or out, Stephen Ireland will dominate the press coverage yet again distracting from the scrutiny that should be applied elsewhere in the squad.

Andy Reid will be an interesting one to watch though. I hope Trap was just making a point last time out and that this doesn't turn into another David O'Leary situation.

I hope Keogh's in there too. He scored and was awarded MOTM against Birmingham on tuesday.

I hope Keogh's in there too. He scored and was awarded MOTM against Birmingham on tuesday.

So he did....still wouldn't be a fan of him though. We've no real use for him I don't think unless we have an outrageous amount of injuries/suspensions. Up front I'd have Keane and probably the 3 Reading lads ahead of him and on the wing I'd have everybody ahead of him, Delap included.

Whelan looks just as much a nothing player for Stoke as he does for Ireland imo, although the 2 games I've seen him in recently were against Liverpool and Man U to be fair. Gibson looks ordinary at best for Man U and certainly not good enough (or at least ready) for centre mid. In a kind world u might get away with one of them but having both is a train wreck. Carsley would OBVIOUSLY add far more substance and clearly Stephen Ireland would complete the puzzle.

I'm a big fan of Keogh but his presence in the squad makes me nervous that he'd be given some kind of shot at RHM which isn't fair on him or us.

It's much of a muchness between him & Long at the moment - both are very promising - but I do think Noel Hunt deserves to keep his place so only one of Long & Keogh for me.

If fairness i wont expcect Trap to call up Delap , St Ledger or Ireland in the squad ..Expect Bruce , Gibson and Keogh

Gibson was uniteds best midfielder in the carling cup. I know the opposition was poor but he still out shone scholes etc.. I think he's good and shouldn't be written off just yet. Think Wilson is a full back naturally but was just covering in centre field for pompey?

Happy that Whelan has forced his way into the stoke starting line up. It will only benefit ireland when it comes to the georgia game as he looks likely to start again. Not saying it's my choice but simply looking on the bright side.

I'd expect a 30 man squad, to be pruned down to 23 over the following 2 weeks depending on form and injuries

Same old, same old! Think we all could name the squad right now!

Might be best for St Ledger anyhow as he's rumoured to be carrying a slight Injury!

I didn't pick the motm in either of those games though would u believe!!! he was ok against Georgia but how Stephen Reid didn't get it is beyond me. As for Montenegro....not a chance for me. I think the Dubs are just a bit soft on him!!

By the way everybody seems to be praising him for forcing his way back into the Stoke team. Has he actually forced his way back in cos Diao was due to play against the Pool only he got injured in the warm up. What about the previous few games - were they on merit or was it due to injuries?

I play Carsley will be included in the squad and started in central midfield. I don't know where Ireland would fit in our team, unless we drop McGeady or Duff. Keane and Doyle are too good to leave on the bench.

people always go on about how trap likes to play two sitting defensive midfielders, thats not true. he likes to play one midfielder sitting, and one box to box midfielder eg. reid(box to box) whelan (sitting) or gibson (box to box) whelan (sitting). so this is where i think ireland could fit into the team, whelan or carsley could sit infront of the back four and i think ireland has the talent to change his game slightly to play the box to box role

Gibson certainly hasn't been playing a box to box role for us so far. He said that he did what Trap asked of him. The difference with S.Reid is he has the experience and confidence to know when it's ok to break forward. He did more than Trap asked imo.

As good as Ireland has been this season, one of the best players in the premiership, if you replaced him with someone like Gareth Barry in this seasons team I don't think Man City would be even close to the relegation zone. That's not a crititism of Ireland, I just think the team are lacking balance because he's still an attacking midfielder, not a central midfielder. I know he's getting back a lot and making tackles but I keep saying it, Tevez gets back in midfield a lot and makes tackles.

Hughes plays very attacking teams though so it'll be interesting to see the team he builds if given the chance.

i doubt that, i think trap would allow ireland as much time as he can to make the call before the georgia game, rather than naming the squad early and cutting him off.

I could see one or two surprises in this squad, i wouldnt be surprised to see Wilsons name appear in the squad list after his recent breakthrough to the Portsmouth team.

There's been questions of Ireland returning before almost every squad but he has so far announced his squad later than most international managers. He'll usually let players know if they're in contention for the squad about a couple of weeks before a game which is why some club websites often tell us of a player in the provisional squad before the squad is announced.

What I think the final squad will look like

Given
Kiely
Randolph/Westwood/Murphy

Kilbane
Ward
Dunne
O'Shea
Bruce
Foley
McShane
Finnan

Duff
Hoolahan
Andrews
Gibson
A. Reid
Whelan
McGeady
S. Hunt

Keane
Doyle
Long
N. Hunt

That's 2 players for every position in a 4-4-2 and an extra goalkeeper
Garvan, Delaney, Ireland, Paddy McCarthy, Nolan, Ledger, Sheridan, Scannell all possibilities to be called into a training squad

I don't see Jamie McCarthy getting a call up.
Stephen Kelly has 8 minutes of football last weekend, far too soon for him
Delap and Carsley to miss out

richieos
15/01/2009, 9:24 PM
i cant see ward and hoolahan being included.

Would pretty much agree with that squad Tets, don't know bout Hoolahan though but hopefully there's a good chance of Ward and Foley being there.

Would love guys like Ledger Ireland and Garvan to be in there but I think we all know that aint gonna happen...

Rumours of Trapp coming to Deepdale this Sat, any news from across the water?

Perhaps he watched the Preston v Liverpool game and realised he was wrong to keep going with the same squad.

And that we do have some good players outside the squad who deserve a chance!

Where are the rumours coming from?

If he did turn up to watch the St Ledger in the flesh, that amounts to a significant step taken by our leader to call a player into the fold.

I expect the squad to be pretty much the same as it has been in the past, i.e. selecting Folan despite him not getting a game at Hull, overlooking St ledger, selecting Murphy despite him being in League 1. It wouldnt surprise me if he persists with Long over N. Hunt too. But who am i to complain when we are comfortably second in the group. Hand on heart i dont think Ireland will be back yet

I dont think any of us can say he wont be in the squad. I think he probably wont be there has to be a reason for the announcement of the squad being brought forward

Nolan is a centre back who can play right back. Won't be playing left back.

Although I have just looked it up and he did indeed play left back last week against Wolves. Apologies bwagner

Always played right back for the Irish underage teams. I think if he was a centre half he'd at least be playing in that position at that level.
