any idea where the north stand in the ratings?

DeLorean
14/01/2009, 1:07 PM
They did reach the quarters in the last world cup. That would suggest they are in the top 8 in the world so maybe 16th isn't so crazy. Of course they didn't qualify for the Euros so that would suggest they are outside the top 16 in Europe alone so who knows? They are also unbeaten in their qualifying group allbeit with only 3 games played.

Sorry I know this has been discussed before, but arent seedings for the WC groups based on these rankings......so they do actually have some importance

They are a joke though. Friendly matches should not be included in determining world rankings..

Although I agree that the rankings are rubbish I think they generally get it right in relation to the actual seedings.

Can anyone remember what position we slipped to that the FAI used as an excuse to sack Kerr? I don't think it was quite this low, was it?

He's right, lets sack Trappatoni! And then sack the next guy we get in if we haven't broken the top 20 within his first handful of games!

Three reasons were given,
drop in rankings,
drop in seedings,
failure to qualify,
and the Swiss had come with no fear, with an over abundance of confidence, to Lansdowne Rd.
Thats 4 ;)
We were about 20th in the Fifa Rankings,
and we had dropped to 3rd seeds for the Euro 2008 draw.
Heady days.

Sacked October 05. We were ranked 21st in October and 23rd in Novermber.
So I expect we were 21th when he was sacked

Ukraine were in the same group as France and Italy so it's not really fair to criticise them for not qualifying. ;)

True enough but they also finished behind the Scots.

We were first seeds in the Euro 2004 qualifiers.....what a mess we made of that. I think the highest we got in the rankings was 14th under Mick McC.

God I hate seeing Australia above us in these rankings, watching them play (and struggle) against the likes of Bahrain, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, China and Iraq (They did manage to hammer Qatar 3 times) with their big game against Japan (admittedly a decent side) makes me wonder what we could do to move to Asia!! Their qualification path to the world cup now seems much easier than when they were in Oceania where they always had to play against one of the South American sides in a play off. My point is, these rankings mean very little.

In fairness if you put a team of white guys in a desert against some of those Asian middle-eastern teams it's a write-off half the time.

Remember Ireland in the sun at USA '94? That's nothing in comparison.

Actually, UEFA use their own coefficient for the EURO. The FIFA Rankings are used for the WC draw - final tournament and qualifiers.

Thats a fair point, however Australia is hardly cold!! Also you have to see the quality of these games (both home and away) to believe how poor it is, its like watching schoolboys.

Next Wednesday - Ireland will move to 26th in the World Rankings - does this move us to the second groups of seeds for European qualification?

Not yet. As stated before, the seeding for the EURO preliminary competition has nothing to do with the FIFA Ranking.

So would we get into the second group of seeds in europe if we out do the denmark results over the next 2 games - like beating bulgaria and drawing against italy?

It's kind of hard to out do Denmark (away to Malta, home against Albania) or Switzerland (home and away against Moldova). You have more chances to out do Serbia (away to Romania) and Israel (home and away against Greece).

Yes they are indeed. They've made great progress this time around and are being touted as a possible surprise package, like Togo and Angola in 2006. They topped their group with Tunisia to qualify for the last phase and might just knock out Cote D' Ivoire.
They would be one of the coolest named countrys to play in a World Cup! :D

Burkina Faso 2-1 England. :D

You'll drop 12 places if you draw Bulgaria at home and lose away to Italy. That's how the probable ranking is computed.
