AvideMux - http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ - has an option to compress divx files down to iPod format. Open the avi file, and export the compressed file. You can copy this over to your iPod. I used it a to put some movies on my iPod for a flight to the states last year.
It's free, and does the job really well.

That's the best software that I've used - available for Mac, Windows, Linux.

Convert straight from DVD to iPod video format.

Handbrake is very good as a converter.

Unfortunately if your DVD is protected, you will need a decoder/ripper aswell.

I use Fairmount and DVD2oneX2 for this.

TBH its a pain in the hole process, particularly if you haven't got a decent processor as it takes ages.
