Personally, I consider the 40's the greatest decade for movie making. But surely thats a debate for another thread?
Mods, can we have a poll on whether the 40s was the greatest decade for movie making is a debate for another thread?
We should debate whether the mods should put up a poll. Or will we run a poll on it?
Anyway, we can't go back as far as the '40s without going back one more decade to capture the greatness of the Marx brothers.

Or indeed the Universal Monster movies of the 30's.

...Universal Monster movies...
Which takes us nicely to Waterworld - the great financial monstrosity of the 1990s.

Guys, i can only put 15 options in a poll. Can we try and whittle it down to that? I cant help but feel we are missing a few fairly important films from this thread still though.
Suggest a few then yourself.

I'll give it a go i suppose, obviously alot of them have been said already. 'Jackie Brown' and 'Reservoir Dogs' have to be in with a shout. 'Usual Suspects' is in there as well. I hate Michael Douglas and avoid his films to be honest but 'Falling Down' was good. 'Braveheart' would get a mention, with loads of the extras being Irish lads in the FCA as well. 'Rob Roy' while we're at it (or was that late 80s?). Would the 'The Phantom Menace' get a mention? Or would it be on the strength of the other films, was it THAT good?
Did the 'Matrix' get mentioned? The first one, which was the best one i thought to be honest. Herself would say 'You've got mail', Fargo was mentioned was it? Twelve Monkeys always gets mentioned but i dont think it was that good, not a top 15 anyway. What Bond movies and Batman movies were out during the 90s, actually i dont think any of them would make the top 15

The Passion of St. Tibulus (1994)
:D:D:D
The 90's was a pretty good decade for movie's, my list in sort of the right order would be:
Pulp fiction
T2
Goodfellas
Shawshank
Resevoir dogs
Braveheart
Usual Suspects
Dumb and Dumber
Trainspotting
Casino
Leon
Falling Down
Fargo
Compared to the 90's this decade has been pretty poor, for me not 1 movie of this decade would make the top 10 of the 90's
Red&White Rover

Trainspotting.
Between that and Goodfella's for me.

I agree that 'There's something about Mary', 'Event Horizon' and 'The Last boy scout' are strange choices and would be nowhere near my top 10 but Dumb and Dumber was the best comedy of the 90's for me whilst I thought Casino was a very good film, not quite as good as Goodfellas but still probably worthy of making the top 10
True Romance
Swimming with Sharks
Desperado
True Romance is always in my top 5 movies of all time - love it.
the other two are highish in my (imaginary) top 50.
I used to tak about it all the time but youre the first person i have met who has seen Swimming with Sharks.... nice one.

Kevin Spacey character (stops shaving abrubtly: " Never say he is dead...just say he's unavailable."

Yes, excellent cast. Very good scenes in it.
During a Dublin Theatre Festival a Chicago drama group brought it over. I got cheap matinee tickets. And during the interval most of the audience, including us, were discussing 'which one is Al Pacino, who's Jack Lemmon..'. It was cool.

DEAR SWEET JESUS. The diversity on here is so great I'm absolutley shocked that we're all linked by a love of football. Could we possibly agree on anything else?
I'm absolutely aghast that no one has made mention of my favourite movie, Good Will Hunting - 1997, yet. Or my second favourite: American History X - 1998.
Apart from that I'd echo most of the other posters:
Fight Club - 1999;
Braveheart - 1995;
Dogma - 1999;
The Big Lebowski - 1998;
Chasing Amy - 1997;
The Usual Suspects - 1994;
Clerks - 1994;
Orgazmo - 1997;
Baseketball - 1998;
The Shawshank Redemption - 1994;
Silence of the Lambs - 1991;
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - 1998.

Of the films mentioned already, I have not tired of watching repeats of
The Usual Suspect, Unforgiven and Fargo.
Maybe one film not mentioned already "Secrets and Lies"
I enjoyed the Titanic, but only that bit where the liner sank.

I did say "maybe" but should have put in a question mark :)
Iīll have a look at La Haine later this week.
If I had to chose one film of the 90īs, it would be Secret and Lies.
People can resonate with Secrets and Lies (like the best of dramas) on any number of levels. It doesnīt manipulate the viewer into feeling a certain emotion despite the numerous wtf situations. The film trusts in the viewer to observe, interpret and feel.
The thing that struck me about it at the time, was the gentle understated, unprejudiced elegance that the educated professional woman (Hortense) expressed while in the process establishing her relationship with a disfunctional family.

Did you know Mike Leigh never told Brenda Blethyn that the actress playing her daughter was black, so the surprise upon meeting her would be even more pronounced?
Great, great film. One which is about subject matter so familiar to us all that it has to be made perfectly, or else the inaccuracies and shortcomings will be easily recognisable. It reminded me of Kramer versus Kramer in that sense.

Plus Kramer Vs Kramer is a 70s film.:rolleyes: I watched Being John Malkovich last night. Truly a classic and utterly unique film. One of the Top films of the 1990s? And, I don't think it has even been mentioned yet.
