I think we all need a feel good story in the league of ireland at the moment and with it being xmas season, etc so thats why I'm posting this in the main forum

Yesterday some st pats fans camed up to united park to play some drogheda fans in a match to raise money for an opposing club who are on their knees. they threw in a few bob for the privilage and also added a few heads from dublin to the gate.

There were also a couple of ex drogs in andy myler and gary cronin playing for the drogs who also threw in a few bob.

The drogs were managed by Roddy Collins who gave up his day to come down to drogheda and managed 'the Rod Squad 2'!! He refused to take part in the 'boxing' after the match until 1k extra was raised from those in attendance to go towards the survival of the drogs - it was raised fairly lively and he took on 3 drogs fans in a boxing match.

Never really had any opinion on pats fans in one way or the other (or roddy for that matter) but with all the bad press league of ireland supporters get and the sl@gging roddy gets on here, I genuinely think this story should be highlighted.

About 3k was raised from the match -again, fair play pats fans, this will never be fotgotten in drogheda - and fair play roddy!!! (youre not THAT bad :D)

Some photos of the match and roddy boxing can be seen here http://www.droghedaunited.ie/album/index/id/273 and here http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z6/stpatsimages/

A great story indeed.

Out of curiousity - was the boxing just a bit of harmless sparring/mucking around, or did anyone try to give Roddy a go of it ? The gloves in those photos seem a bit bigger than regulation size - particularly the non-Roddy pair - which suggests it was all teed-up to be harmless fun. I'd have loved to have brought me own gloves along..... :D

Roddy has to be the obvious choice for Drogs now if they do survive.

I played in the match. It was great craic. We would have won if Myler and Cronin weren't playin. Myler got 2, Cronin got 1 and then an OG aswell
