View Full Version : Marty Morrissey on the Panel (more whinging)

Marty Morrissey and his entirely unfeasible hair were on the panel tonight, and he was asked what his sporting highlights of the year were: Harrington, blah, blah, Munster, blah, Kilkenny.......
What other country in Europe would a domestic football double win and record league points total not be a highlight? whinge, whine.....we are so beneath the radar that no one even thought to mention it.

Didn't think Marty mouse was a Boez supporter, although he does look like one!:p
He is a bogball person. LOI doesn't even cross his radar. Some people would moan about anything.
The LOI was such a washout this year even fans of the league can't remember who won the trophies...

My favourite season in years. Pretty sure fans of 2/3 clubs were happy. same as every season. As it is in every league
The less MArty Morrisseys we have in LOI circles the better. Anyone remember the interview with Frankie barrett's mother?

In fairness, I accidentally overhead Des "Ah-Sure-I'm-Just-A-Likeable-Eejit" Cahill's show earlier. He was asking the panellists for their hopes for the year ahead and George Hamilton, of all people, made a point of bringing up the LoI and said he hoped the quality of the football in the league wouldn't be overshadowed again next year.

I don't think Boh's double set the country's collective heart racing in all fairness...

i think thats the point sonofstan is trying to make... it didnt even warrant a mention in a national discussion about the Irish sporting year. Therein lies the problem.

Thank you. That's it exactly. And its not (just) because its Bohs either - any team who did what we did this year would be exceptional.

The bohmeians Keeper Brian Murphy has made the moninations for sportstar of the year along with the likes of Katie Taylor and Padraig Harrington and Bohs themselves made the team of the year list along with the aforementioned Munster and Kilkenny.
Would have thought that excellent recognition?
Just because some oaf from Clare doen't mention it on a comedy show - doesn't mean anything really.

I was at a cup replay in the Iveagh Grounds St James's Gate v Derry City circa 1995 and Marty was there apparently off duty. Never saw him at a football match before or since.
In fairness I don't recall him ever being bigoted about Irish football. He may have little interest. We all have different sporting highlights. I'd have said Pats v Elfsborg anyway for domestic football. :D

I don't think people will lose to much sleep over Marty's blithe neglect of the game. His endorsement would probably be a liability anyway.
But isn't it the by-now embedded serial non-mentions from oafs from various parts of the country that is the problem? On that score, fair play to Des Cahill for trying to strike a balance.
Hang on, he wasn't there to strike a balance - he was asked his opinion and he gave it.
Exactly.
To be honest, this is nit-picking of the highest order.
A presenter who, as is well known, doesn't particularly like football, never mind LOI, gives his personal highlights of the year and they don't include Bohs, so what?
Hang on, he wasn't there to strike a balanceMaybe he was drinking out of a Derry City mug :D
Didnt see the programme but if he was asked for his sporting highlight,
and he has no interest in LoI football, then I dont see why people think he
should mention Bohs (or any other LoI achievment)
It's be like having Rico or someone on and being surprised he didnt mention
St Patricks Handball Club Cavan winning the Intermediate final and being promoted to senior!
Yes it is a momentous sporting achievement ... but only for people who give a
hoot about the sport.

Which, as I said, is no loss, either to Bohs or the national league.

as far as im concerned drogheda drawing 2-2(never mind 0-0) in Kyiv is a bigger 'sporting moment' than Bohs winning the double.
I'd apply this logic to any league and especially when the league won in question was not exactly hotly contested.
marty is not a soccer fan so i dont get what your going on about.

Yeah, I'm probably being over sensitive - it gets to me sometimes how under the radar we are, in a supposedly sports mad country is all. I'll stop now.

so what????
he was asked HIS OPINION ...
The achievements he mentioned by harrington , kilkenny etc were great achievements and thats taking nothing away from bohs fantastic season.
As far as i know he is a more GAA than soccer.
If Bohs season didnt make it into nicky brennans year highlight list ..would u get annoyed by that too?

fair play to him for caring bout the league.
but there is no point in making a debate cos some guy didnt rate bohs achievements as his personal highlight of the year.....
its just a pointless argument

Well, he wasn't asked to name his personal highlights: he was asked to name what, in his opinion, were the highlights of the year - slightly different. Which is why I started this.

And he is a professional sports journalist. But, as I think we all agree, it's only Marti M., he's GAA to the bone, so on an individual level it's not really significant/whatever yer havin' yerself etc.
Just more of what we're used to. We really should know our place.

sweet jesus, winning the league by like a gallazion points is not exactly a great sporting moment for a random sports journalist.
harrington won on the world stage, katy taylor won on the world stage, we got medals in boxing, all bigger than bohs achievment.
winning the all ireland is also much bigger than bohs achievment in this country.

from your opening post in this thread: "he was asked what HIS sporting highlights of the year were: "
how can that be different to personal highlights!!!
id take that as personal highlights.
as bohdiddley said he is a sports journalist - marty just viewed harringtons achievements and that of kilkenny as bigger highlights in his sporting view(aka personal view)...it was nothing to do with irish football being ignored

i think some people are missing the mark slightly on this one - in a proper soccer nation the performance of Bohs would be at the top of every journalists/commentators list of highlights (irrespective of their "area of interest"), as would the euro performances etc etc.
Its not really a "Bohs" issue that sonofstan is talking about (those with the anti-Bohs goggles can now safely remove them) - its the bigger picture we should be looking at, in that domestic soccer doesnt even get a mention. Thats pretty atrocious, regardless of whether its Marty Morrissey or Tracey bleedin Piggott.
Its not unusual for this sort of ignorance to shine through in the domestic media but it should still remain a matter of discussion on this forum.

who said ireland was a 'proper nation' and why is the terminology for a sport a determining factor in getting the title of a 'proper nation'
BTW bohs lifting the league title or cup is one of the first images when they advertise the rte sports awards.

...know nothing about football.
One plays "football" in an outfit that was surely designed to be worn by a 21 year old lap dancer and bounces a ball that isn't round (not the brightest bunch) and the other they wear helmets and carry measuring tape and flags around.
We're not far behind but you can blame the boggers for that.*
*please don't take my post too seriously. There's no football on so we have to keep our minds occupied in some way or other.

no anti bohs goggles ere skstu - fair play to bohs and well done to them.
all i am saying is that certain sports correspondents are going to obviously favour certain sports. Morrissey being one of them - and to him the e.l's achievements was not favoured more than golf /gaa this season hence why it didnt make his list.
i dont think it is down to morrisseys ignorance that he didnt mention the e.l on his list, its just a matter of preferred choice

LOI fans are probably the only people who are uplifted when a day passes that their poorly run clubs don't beg for a grubby handout.
- Cork-Harps-Galway-Drogheda-....soon to be Bohs.
Last 2 league champions pennyless paupers.
Instead of knocking what is in most parts a well run organisation, you be far better off acquiring some of their business acumen.
There are many fine people trying to do goods things at underage football and LOI. Unfortunately begrudgery and pettyness won't fill LOI seats or bank balances.
