The derry crowds are hardly a shock,
they have been steadily dropping ever sinve Kenny left for Scotland 2 years ago, only worry is when will the stop dropping, there down around the bad days
of relegation battles in 4/5 years ago at this stage

They are far from being the biggest club in the country. Their support is very fickle. Will always get big crowds when your doing well and challenging for titles.
Been to the cross a few times this season and the crowds were not as big as City would like everyone to believe.

We do have a fickle support but the core of 2500 is prob the biggest in the league

The size of your fan base is probably the most important factor for football here, so yeh, why wouldn't it?

I wouldve thought a clubs success and financial situation would determine how big a club were is why.

Surely you have to weigh in attendences with history and current status when determining who the biggest club in the land is?

I'd agree with what they won to a certain extent but I don't see how a clubs financial situation relates to how big a club they are..

That would make the 37's probably the smallest club in league.;)

What a load of ****!! Cork Bohs Derry She;s and Shams have a big history the rest of us have not got alot to be proud of, small achievements is all we have in honest trurh so just cause your higher thab lims now get back in your box and realise quite easily in a years time sligo could be in div 1. Really dont like the arrognane of your comment!!

Been to a few matches at the cross this season and the biggest crowd I saw was against Ramblers, over 3,000. Other then that lucky if there was 2,000 there.
Considering it is the second biggest city in the country and no other premier team compete with in the city I'd expect bigger crowds.
Maybe someday city might be considered the biggest club in the country, but just not yet.

I wouldn't worry about it Bella, he doesn't even support a LoI team (he used to have a Shamrock Rovers crest as his avatar), plus he's clearly forgotten the existence of Sporting Fingal

Cork's website post official attendances. Highest was 4971 and there were a lot over 3000 and some others in the 4000s.

Not taking anything away from Cork City but surely it's to do with the fact that their the only club in a big city. IMO their attendances should be higher. If there was only ever two clubs in Dublin then IMO they would both have a bigger fan base than Cork City

true but the population of Dublin is about 4-5 times more than cork city's and there is 6 clubs in Dublin (3 1st division next season) unless you count all of cork county which would make it nearly half of Dublins population.
It is true we dont get as many per head of population as some towns like Sligo Dundalk but we are up against really good Cork Hurling, GAA football, Munster Rugby and Basketball.
We played a Home games against Rovers on a tuesday night (normally one of our biggest gates) but it was a Munster home coming after the Heinekin Cup win and i dont think there was 2,000 at the game. If that game was on a Friday night with nothing else on i would have expected 4,000-5,000 at the game

Agreed, and it's great for the league. I would expect Dublin clubs in that situation to get higher atendances

I don't want to even attempt to order the league in terms of 'big clubs', Cork would be up there though.

I have to agree there, but the same can be said for most, if not all other clubs. And attendance-wise we do have a big advantage due to population.

When Cork are playing a big match in Europe, most Cork people will know about it and support them because a lot of them feel the football team (just like the the GAA teams) are representing their city. There's no comparison with the Dublin teams.
Maybe cork are now with regard to attendances, but from tradition/honours won, its hard to look past rovers/bohs/shels/dundalk/pats
I think the honours list are in this order for the top 5 - derry not included as this is taken over the period from the foundation of the lge in 1926 to present
PS you could argue for sheer size and honours that linfield would be the no 1 club in all of ireland - but thats for another days argument

If we could get every Cork team in the history of the league reformed and playing together we would have loads of huge teams.
I reckon the next Cork team that gets formed will be even bigger than this current one.
Big big team this Cork lads.

Wasn't really around for all the other clubs myself (apart from Hibs when I was a youngun) so I can't answer for them - however when we faced our toughest crises yet this year the supporters played their part in keeping the show on the road - maybe we can call it quits and say we are the biggest crises club in the country (this year anyway).

but didnt rovers fans do just as good, if not better job with there club, which seems to be doing nicely now, and looks fairly steady, cork is yet to be determined,
you couldnt say whos the biggest, how far are derry off corks attendances, and they were in 2 cup finals one of which they won,
it takes a lot more than fans to make a club a big club

Stupid argument. Bohs are obviously the Biggest club. They have won most leagues, most cups, have the most fans, the biggest bars, the biggest legal fees, the smallest manager and every other club are Minnows compared to them.

I dont know about that - would mean increasing our avg by 1,000 to hit the 2,500 mark - very unlikely - even with away support - also we`ll lose some support if we dont start off well. We might hit 3,000 for big games and more hopefully if we have a louth derby
But an avg of 2,000 would be a more realistic figure to aim for imo

That old cliche gets smugly wheeled out in every attendances discussion, and it's just pompous bullsh!t.
One-upmanship is part and parcel of football - over results, over size of support, over shirt sales, over size and quality of stadium, over who has the best pies etc. If you don't like it, don't follow football, as it's just the way things are in the game.
And why is it only comparing attendances that is allegedly akin to comparing cancer ? What about results and trophies ? There are many in Ireland and elsewhere who would say that it is irrelevant who wins the Eircom League, as the standard is muck (which it is if you compare us with La Liga or the English Premiership). So no point Bohs thinking they're great, as it just means their footballing 'cancer' is slightly better than everyone else's. Yet no-one complains when there's one-upmanship over results, or rolls out a cliche to proclaim that we should all really just be above all that nonesense.
And just like other league's look down on our attendances, we look down on other's in-turn (e.g. the Irish League).
One-upmanship in football covers everything - including crowds. It's just the way the game is. Like it or lump it.

 Yeah it was my post that had the pompous bull**** in it...

One upmanship is fine, when there is something to celebrate about. But forgive me for not celebrating the fact that in a county of over 200k people we get just over 1% of them in our gates.
If you don't like it, don't follow football, as it's just the way things are in the game.
:D Yeah, cos I follow football for the oneupmanship....
If thats the reason you follow the game then your missing some of the better stuff.
There are plenty of things people claim 'are just the way things' but you dont have to accept them or like them to enjoy the game
And why is it only comparing attendances that is allegedly akin to comparing cancer ? What about results and trophies ? There are many in Ireland and elsewhere who would say that it is irrelevant who wins the Eircom League, as the standard is muck (which it is if you compare us with La Liga or the English Premiership)
What? Im struggling to find any sense in that tbh.
It is widely accepted by LOI fans that our attendances are rubbish. I dont give a crap what non-LOI fans think, nor am I coming to the conclusion that theyre rubbish in comparison to the Premiership or La Liga.
When the time comes that LOI all think the league/Cup is rubbish then you might have a point.
A but like the league cup ;)
And just like other league's look down on our attendances, we look down on other's in-turn (e.g. the Irish League).
I dont look down on any other leagues crowds, in fact I couldnt care less about them.
I care about our league and our league only.
The one upmanship is ******** when it comes to attendances because we get 1.5% of our population to come to games, other teams like Cobh might get 15% of their population but somehow were better because we've a few thousand in the gate.
When LOI teams are getting proper crowds, marketing themselves and the league properly and actually doing somethign to attract people in the gate then Il be more than happy to celebrate the fact that we have the biggest crowds with our 10k.
Until then I'll feel free to say that ALL our attendances are ****e and noone from any club has anything to gloat about given how little is being done to change that in comparison to what should be done.
Thanks
