The last line of defence

When Seamus Kelly was wooed by the lucre at Bohemians in the close-season, rookie St Patrick’s Athletic manager Eamon Collins was charged with the task of replacing a goalkeeper considered by many to be the best in the league. Step forward Chris Adamson, the young Englishman who will attempt to win his second piece of silverware in two months on Sunday afternoon.

Kelly, the first-choice goalkeeper at Richmond Park for three seasons, was enticed by the challenge of keeping goal for the reigning eircom League champions. He had just been with the Saints during a turbulent season which had seen them involved in the relegation mire until the last weekend of the season, when Bohs were celebrating their second title in three seasons. The decision to leave, to take the next step, was probably understandable, but it left Collins – about to enter his first season as Saints manager – with a large gap to plug.
