Would there be much intesrest in local bands from the people that post here? I was thinking of setting up a sticky giving the names of recommended local talent, and including up to date gig info if people were interested.

The way I'd work it would be to have a thread like this for people to throw out names, myspace pages, gig info, whatever. That way if say a Limerick band like Giveamanakick were playing in Dublin and the Dublin based posters were looking for something to do at the weekend they could check out the stickied thread. Might work, might not, but would there be an interest in such a thing?

Very good idea. Fair play Jebus. I must say I would not recommend anything I thought was rubbish or that I would not listen to myself even if it was by my mate etc.

I wouldn't have a problem with it anyway, to be fair I'd be throwing up a few of my mates bands as well. I'll run it by our overlord to see if it's okay though

Okay lads, here's the deal.

We're allowed list our mates bands (or your own) provided they are unsigned. If they have upcoming gigs just link to their homepage/myspace and we can check it our for ourselves.

Anyways here's one for starters

One Day International (http://www.onedayinternationalmusic.com/)

I caught these in Dolans Upstairs last week. There was a very small crowd there but they played a blinder (mark of a good band for me is how they treat their small crowds). Reminded me of the Tindersticks in places, Ron Sexsmith in others and the National during one song. They're currently on tour with dates left in Cork and Galway if anyone's interested.

Also, despite there only being 6 tables used on the night they managed to shift quite a bit of stock from what I saw. I picked up an album and I'm really enjoying it at the minute.

Very good idea. Don't see the problem with plugging friends' bands either (signed or otherwise) - afterall, if they're shyte the plugor will pay dearly. :D

The Aftermath (www.myspace.com/theaftermathband), from Longford, now based in Mullingar. I think they're excellent, and not just because they're mates. I don't think the single releases do them justice. Oh yeah, and they are unsigned, all releases on their own label.

Belfast has some great talent.

There's Oppenheimer, who've been supporting They Might Be Giants in the states. They're synthy pop, some great hooks.

www.myspace.com/oppenheimer

Then if you're into your post rock (which sounds awful and really means instrumental from what I can tell) there's And So I Watch You From Afar. They're sort of like Mogwai. They've been touring like billyo all summer and are very ambitious and talented. They drew a crowd of 4,000 at Pukkelpop, which isn't bad for a band of their ilk.

From Derry, one band that have really impressed me over the last year or two is Here Come the Landed Gentry. They've a certain rockabilly swagger that goes down well.

www.myspace.com/herecomesthelandedgentry

3 very different bands that will appeal to 3 very different audiences.
