Just going back to the earlier pages on this thread where people were drawing up lists of top keepers in UK and Howard was mentioned by a few, I have to say I think that Howard has reverted to type again recently - error against Liverpool (as well as fine saves) and he really should have stopped Van Persie's goal last night. It's a fine line but I think Howard has far too many "he should /could have saved that" moments in Everton's big games.

Agree with the first part - but you're a really task master if you think he 'should' have saved van persies effort. If he had saved it, which I agree was not impossible it would have been a fabulous save however, it was taken quickly and with power and on the rise from relatively close range - most keepers wouldnt have smelt it!!

I guess so, for those of you who still rely on wind up clocks.

Either way, Betfair doesn't take bets on predicting what time it is :D ....sorry, can't find a "smug" emoticon.

And, no, I didn't place any money on the Robbie Keane nonsense "prediction" from Talksport! Curious though if it affected the market?

....... anyway.

It looks like City are trying to play hardball. I cant say I really blame them. just like Chelsea a few years ago, as soon as they go for any player the prices get inflated.
10m is a bit too much I think and 5m is too little. It makes me think what a bargain United got when they nicked Van Der Saar for 2m!

Looks like its going to happen, Given wants to go, City Want him and Newcastle are giving permission to talk!

I think it'd be a great move for him...Class act, and still going strong. Anything that helps him to keep going with Ireland is good imo

Looks like Shay is trying to break the deadlock over his move to Man City by submitting a transfer request (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/nolan-set-for-pound45m-newcastle-move-while-given-heads-for-exit-1520264.html)

Bellamy £14m Shay £5. I guess they want to get what they can as he's out of contract but the deal is for more than £5m.

According to the BBC Shay has signed a 4.5 year contract with Manchester City for an undisclosed fee.

Good luck to him - hope City sign some more players so they give Shay a chance to win a trophy or two.

At least now our number 1 goalkeeper will have a chance of having a good defence in front of him, I am suprised with the length of time he spent in newcastle trying to patch up Newcastle leaking wall,
I really do think they could be in trouble now, Duff should have jumped ship

Not sure if youve seen Citys defence this season but 'good' is not a word Id use to describe them. I dont think they've strengthed in the transfer window either (tho I could be wrong)

They've brought in Bridge and if Richards doesn't pick up form I'd fancy Kompany to be moved back to defense when Johnston is back from injury (to play beside De Jong).

Richards lost out on centre back a few games ago and got moved to right back with Kompany and Dunne at centre, and more recently Onohua (sp) with Dunne suspended.

In reality the call people want is for Zabaleta to be moved from centre to right back, Richards dropped and Elano played in the centre. I don't think Johnson will get back in the team.

I think Johnson will be straight back in the team when he's back.

City turned down an 8 million bid from Newcastle for Johnson, I don't think he's going anywhere
Petrov and Bojinov both seem to be made of glass, and the only player that'll be affected by their return is Vassell, he'll be pushed further down the pecking order and probably shipped out in the summer. I think his contract is up then anyay

Of course, I forgot all about Bridge with all the Keane hype in the past few days! He will make a big difference.

I saw Kompany as a 17yr old playing for Anderlecht vs Celtic out in Brussels. He played at Centre Half and was brilliant. The couple of games I have seen of him play for City in midfield, I think he has looked decent, though I have read mixed reviews on here. Richards is definitely having a bout of second season syndrome!!

Always hoped that Given would win something as a player, that was never going to happen in Newcastle and need to be convinced about Man City, but wish him the best

don't think he's overrated anymore, if anything he never lived to his early promise with Villa, and when he appeared for England.

Well, he played and captained the Citys Youth team in 05/06. He's played about 88 games for the first team (using wiki stats) So Im guessing thats 2 to2 and half seasons of regular first team football. Though he obviously probably made his first team debut about 3-4seasons ago. I could be wrong but Im sure it was last season, possible the season before when he was getting regular rave reviews.

Overrated by whom? Jaysus City fans that I know think hes muck.

Not sure I just remember him scoring an equaliser on his debut (i think) at Villa Park and that seems a long time ago to me now. Definitely more than 2yrs.

Ya I just meant in the sense that he's been capped over 20 times for England.

Debut VS Arsenal, 22-October-2005: http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=468764
First goal VS Aston Villa, 19-February-2006: http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=478387

Anyway, this is getting away from the topic at hand. Given's move to Man City will give him European football in the UEFA Cup, and a stronger defence to play behind. With our 2 best defensive players (Dunne and Given) playing together on a far more regular basis, you would hope that this will continue to strengthen the defence for the international side.

Agreed, lets hope they stop shipping the goals tho and start heading up the table for the confidence of both of them.

I was at the game yesterday and he was outstanding. Brilliant debut. S Ireland played ok but tried the difficult pass a few too many times. Micah Richard's was awful. We were behind the goal in the first half and the guy has no positional sense whatsoever - McShane gets stick for wandering but this was something else.

Watched it on TV and thought Ireland was excellent. Unlike yourself, I thought he kept it simple for the most part and only tried the killer pass when it was a realistic option. Given's first save was top class, the replay's didn't do it justice as it was a very powerful shot.
