The death has occurred in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, of the FAI’s Senior Coach Educator and manager of the Irish Universities men’s team, Noel O’Reilly. Aged 60, he was one of the most respected figures in Irish football and a valuable member of the FAI staff at Abbotstown.

Only 60.

Sad news.

Many fond memories of Noel and he was always there for me when I started out at this journalism lark.

Most of our discussions were off the record but he never failed to answer a call or get back if he was busy.

An absolute gentleman in every way and many of our current stars have Noel to thank for his advice, praise, criticism but above all his neverending encouragement.

Someone somewhere is currently being entertained by Noel and his guitar.

They probably heard that the sisiter-in-law of the Sunderland groundskeeper has a migrane and they are seeing how that develops first.

RIP - not that 99% of the "soccer-mad" Irish public and journailsts will notice or care...

His contribution to my club and to Irish football generally should never be underestimated. A giant of a little man.

RIP Noel and deepest sympathies to Rose.

Out having a few pints with a couple of old football mates from 25 years ago earlier when the news came through, in a second it took us all back to Fairview Park where his passion and coaching brilliance first came to notice. A great coach but an even greater man. RIP Noel. A sad sad day.

A great coach but an even greater man.

That is the essence of the man there.

Unfortunately his passing will be merely a footnote in another weekend of publicity driven media hype. Great fella, big loss.

Sad to see someone go at 60, days after being out on the road giving a coaching course. He did alot of the game in this country ...

RIP Noel, was it sudden

Very sudden, heard of his illness at the Pats-Derry match on Tuesday, and even then it sounded like there wasn't much hope :(

Great man. For all the things he's done for youth football and for the club I support, but more so for being such a decent, likeable bloke - Noel, I salute you.

A true loss.. his work abroad representing the FAI and the country was phenomenal. In Japan, at WC2002 he did training sessions with local youths in the location where the national team were based... the kids loved it, and it was a pleasure to work with him...

really sad news, heard it on the rte radio soccer programme friday night. Met him around 1994/95, he had a few days off and was on a break down here in the west of ireland. had the guitar with him and sang a few songs. returned later in the year and organised a soccer blitz for the young kids. Probably one of the most decent of men i have ever met, my sympathy to Rose who i got to know as well.I stil have a t-shirt from an American soccer camp he gave me. When i think of the singsongs we had, it brings back great memories. A massive loss to both the game and society. rip

I was absoloutely stunned when I read it on the newspaper in Charlestown. I met him on a few occasions and I have to say, not only he was a great coach, but he bore humility. His humbleness at the Kennedy Cup in Limerick stood out as he would have a chat with anybody with a passion and interest in the game. This guy was a legend to schoolboys and youths football in Ireland, and he is a very hard act to follow. RIP.
