Outkast took the 2003 gold and Arcade Fire are romping it in 2004 so let's see how this one goes. Line up isn't as strong this year as it was in 2004 (which has to be said was one of the stronger line ups of any of these polls), but there's still some good stuff in there

Anyway albums that just missed the cut this year including ones by The National, Sigur Ros, My Morning Jacket, Eels, Kaiser Chiefs, MIA, Antony & The Johnsons, Magic Numbers, Amadou et Miriam, Kanye West and the White Stripes.

Went for Gorillaz in the end. Just brilliantly crafted pop songs and for the best capturing of a Shaun Ryder vocal in years.

Honourable mentions:

Supergrass - Road to Rouen
Damien Dempsey - Shots
Coldplay - X + Y

2005 is easy peasy. Achtung Bono by Half Man Half Biscuit.

"with wattle and daub 'neath a silv'ry moon/
we built this village on a trad arr tune"

Was a very very close call between Silent Alarm and Demon Days. Demon Days winning by a whisker, some very original songs with some brilliant cameo performances by Shaun Ryder, Roots Manuva, etc. Bloc Party's debut was an absolute cracker, a real gem. Third to the Magic Numbers, a really heartfelt album, some feel good beautiful stuff on it. Just a shame about their awful follow up. Honourable mentions to Supergrass 'Road to Rouen', Sigur Ros 'Takk' and a real return to form of Depeche Mode 'Playing the Angel'...

I thought it was a good year.
My favourites off the top of my head:

Sigur Ros - Takk
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - CYHSY
Broken Social Scene - BSS
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise

Takk is probably my favourite but 'Other' never wins and so I'll go Silent Alarm because I want my vote to count! :)

Frank Blacks Homeycomb is worth a mention, as does Broken Social Scene's Broken Social Scene. Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, Its Morning gets the nod.

Trying to choose between George Clinton, Kanye West, The Coral, Gorillaz and The Game.

I think The Coral's The Invisible Invasion sneaks it for me.

Feeder - Pushing The Senses

Completely forgot to nominate Feeder - Comfort in Sound for 2003's shortlist. This album was quite good too.

Josh Rouse with Nashville for 2005 and then Ryan Adams and the Cardinals with Cold Roses.

Think the singles were re-released after they flopped the first time round. Not sure how 'Rockstar' got stellar this year, but they've just re-released the third single of 2005's album. In 2008. Very strange.

X&Y worryingly in the running to take the best album of 2005. It's far from Coldplay's best album. If it takes it ahead of Gorillaz, there's no hope in this world. We cannot let this happen.

TBH no Coldplay album should come out top in ANY year!!!!

i'll be happy if a late surge for Bloc Party takes it either. But please, for the love of God, don't make Coldplay win this. For the record, I don't mind Coldplay so much. 'A Rush of Blood' was a great album, and 'Viva la Vida' and 'Parachutes' good efforts. 'X&Y' marked the decline.

ABC for 2005.

Anyone but Coldplay.

Decline is a bit of a harsh word, Pauro.

I think X+Y was their only dip below excellence, to be fair.

Just thought X+Y was a major disappointment compared to the progression made from Parachutes to A Rush of Blood.. It's pretty much Coldplay by numbers, and although I don't dislike the band, just think it'd be a travesty if they win this poll.

Another 'bubbling under' vote for Foo Fighters 'In Your Honour', one of their better efforts.

I agree that X+Y is not their best effort and it doesn't deserve to win the poll. That said, I think they've bounced back with a great effort in "Viva la Vida".
