I was just checking this out on empireonline.com. It's the biggest poll in Uk film history I believe. The top 5 is pretty predictable, but hard to argue with. It was 5: Jaws 4: Shawshank 3: Empire Strikes Back 2: Raiders of the Lost Ark 1: Godfather.
Citizen Kane, the usual winner of such things was 28.

Oh I'd argue with it...

Empire Strikes back is ****e, and the ending of the Shawshank Redmption is ridiculous How did he manage to pin the poster back over the hole on all four corners?

Couldn't he have just lifted up the bottom part of the poster and leave it fall back into place after he crawls through? IIRC, there's no proof that all four corners are pinned back into place when the warden pulls the poster off the wall.

Just a few movies that I thought should have been way above their positions:

467-Deer Hunter
457-Full Metal Jacket
445-Dumb and Dumber
439-Grosse Point Blank
387-Rain Man
316-Trainspotting
308-The Terminator
273-The Maltese Falcon

There is proof. When the hole is found, the guard/cop (not sure) rips a bit more from it. The bottom parts of the poster are clearly hanging from where they were stuck to the wall.

Believe me I've looked at it loads of times. Hoping I was wrong at the start, adn then proving it to others

Yes but it is a paper poster - there's a bit of flexibility there that can allow him to put his hand under and position the last pin. As the hole is the width of his body and the poster is only held up by four pins, I think he could get his hand under and put the last pin in place.

I disagree. And it ruins the film for me.

Good up to that alright... (but still nowhere near top ten of all time)

Well said, i think we discussed that many moons ago.

You could definitely get that pin back in place from the inside. Give me a wire coat hanger, two pieces of Wrigglies Spearmint gum, four pins and a poster and a great big hole in the wall and i'd bet yeah €100 i could do it ;)

Good up to that? Sure thats most of the film so :p

Shawshank is possibly most overrated film ever, It is a nice story well told but shouldn't be anywhere near top 10 lists. Footballers favourite movie alongside pasta for food as appeared in ever almost every Shoot interview :p

You know that's ten pretty great movies there and all were poorly placed in the poll. Except The Dark Knight (15)

Thats more a reflection of the age of the people who responded rather than the pedigree of the films I would argue.

How could Jaws make number 5? When you think back on cinematic history and a film like that makes the top 5 somethings wrong.

Well it is seen by most as the birth of the Summer blockbuster and is hugely popular still today. The theme music and impact it had is pretty huge. I grew up being pretty scared of swimming too far out in Kilkee bay thanks to that damn thing!! Anyway, I would say it's a classic, but I agree, wouldn't make my top ten either. What's your top ten??

Changes practically every day but I'd put these as my top 10 in no particular order (today at least :))

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Thin Red Line
Cinema Paradiso
Life Is Beautiful
Goodfellas
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Back To The Future
Back To The Future 2
City Of God

Heliodorus

Mine changes everyday as well however in no particular order:-

Its a wonderful Life
Donie Darko
The Life and Death of Col. Blimp
Godfather II
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930 version - after a shaky start)
The Third Man
Pans Labyrinth
The Life Of Brian
A Matter of Life and Death
American Beauty

Having said that I cant believe I didnt include a Hitchcock film. Also, for me, the start of Great Expectations is the greatest start of any film ever made.
If I could include an 11th film it would Le Boucher (the Butcher - brilliant). The two best silent films for me would be Nosferatu and Sunrise.

It will be probably a totally different list tomorrow

Intresting, Godfather II but no part one in your ten. Strange one that.

Also, as you mentioned It's A Wonderful Life, well Zaavi at the moment is selling a Jimmy Stewart boxset with 6 of his best for only 13 euro. I picked it up yesterday. It contains: Mr Smith Goes To Washington, Anatomy of a Murder, Two Rode Out, and 3 others.

Back To The Future
Back To The Future 2

20% of your list?

Aside from Lord of the Rings not bad list.

After Shawshank Lord of the Rings next most overrated film franchise. Good to watch once but don't think ever watched again. Third one was 90 minutes too long.

Yeah I genuinely think Back To The Future would be regarded as the best Trilogy had they not made an average third one. I think the first two knock the socks off of the first two Godfathers, Eps 4 and 5 of Star Wars, etc. Have watched both of them about 30 times now and never tire of them.

Lord Of The Rings splits people, but I personally loved the first one and thought the other two were good.

Dr Strangelove should really get a mention too

Not really. I love both but if given the choice I would watch Back To The Future over the Godfather any day of the week. Mindless fun no doubt, but that's half the battle at the cinema

Well, to be honest, hand on heart, I've seen Back to the Future more times, so yes it is undeniably more fun, but as a movie fan, I'd have to say Godfather is quiet simply, (to steal a line from another film,) As Good As It Gets..

Gremlins
The Burbs
Big Trouble In Little China
Back to the Future Trilogy
Star Wars (Original Trilogy)
Tremors
Die Hard Trilogy
Beetlejuice
Coming To America
Blues Brothers

Not bad at all, Tremors I probably would have forgotten about but is worth a mention alright. I'd add

Aliens, The Lion King, Toy Story 1+2, Breakfast At Tiffanys, Halloween, Romeo + Juliet (1996 version), All of the Marx Brothers really, but Duck Soup in particular, Dumb + Dumber, The Big Lebowski and Predator off the top of my head.

The Big Lebowski and Duck Soup could easily have ended up on my main list, and I'm surprised I haven't put Rocky on either cause what's not to love about that guy and that movie :)

OK the magazine landed on my door and I've had a flick through and surprised at quite a few of the selections.

My top 12 (off the top of my head):

Memento
Goodfellas
Godfather part 1
Taxi Driver
Swingers
Very Bad Things - **** funny
The Good The Bad The Ugly
Terminator 2
The thin red line
Usual Suspects
Being John Malkovich/Adaptation
Die Hard 1

Probably missed out a few classics in my haste to get some films down. Star Wars and LOTR wouldn't get in my top 1000!!!!!!

Halloween, my favourite ever horror. Classic. I must have seen Predator 50 times, Duck Soup is just brilliant. Dumb and Dumber again top class, as well as Big Lebowski. But I find I enjoy Lebowski more when I leave it alone for about a year, then watch it.

A few more springing to mind here,
Comedy: Blazing Saddles, The Ref(Hostile Hostages), National Lampoons Vacation(Chevy Chase Ones), Naked Gun, Stir Crazy and Trading Places.
Cult: The Lost Boys, Office Space, Escape From New York, Fear and Loathing, Nightmare Before Christmas.
Sci-Fi: Total Recall, Running Man, The Thing, Independence Day(Corny but great)
