The game was on live here in the US. Duff looked very bright in the first half and was giving his marker a torrid time. Unfortunately Newcastle's defence was dreadful and all the heads went down in the second half.

The Duffer did enough to show that he's first choice for us though.

I was watching it myself. Did you hear the co-commentator (Davie Provan?) say Duff was one of the few who could look at himself in the mirror. In a pathetic Newcastle team Duff played well. For someone coming back from injury he kept the ball well and almost scored with one angled shot (good save by WH keeper). I almost fell off my chair when the camera panned the director's box and commentator said "they are the West Ham owners". Tardelli with 2 other blokes!

He's had plenty of chances to go, his mrs doesn't want to leave her family in carToon land. Think a brother of his has settled over there and all.....

Alumina looked a bit dodgy on Saturday. Would be a great move for Given.

yeah, shay has missed the boat big time on that, it would be my one criticism of him, his lack of ambition to win anything..pure shame IMO, esp when you think of the shiit goalies whi have cl medals

Yeah Shay has made that bed form himself and now he must lay in it. I wish he was at a better club but I can't really feel sorry for him.

My worry is that he has had too much practice and been scored upon so many times that even he might start to doubt his own ability. He should be long gone out of that club ages ago

Really? The radio said Almunia was superb.

Pundits don't know dick about goalkeeping. Sorensen was applauded for his performance at Anfield despite making the cardinal error of twice being beaten by inswinging free kicks. Defending these well is the mark of a top goalkeeper in my view.

Shay has been a top performer for us for so long it is very hard to critise him.... however, when he hangs up his gloves he will surely look back on a career where he won nothing despite being the top goalkeeper (or thereabouts) in the league for nigh on a decade.

While it is easier to respect, say Shearer, staying with/going to Newcastle (as it is his home town club) and winning nothing Given has no original attachment to the place only that he ended up playing there. A shame really imho.

Would you take a transfer in work out of a place you like living to another place just cause you are going to be promoted. I often find that people say things about footballers but do not practice in real life. I would not head to some place I would not be happy just for a promotion. Maybe Shay feels the same.

Its really not equatable to most of our jobs. Sportsmen generally want to win things, the really good ones are usually the most competitive too.

thats the same as any profession though, the really good ones, are ambitious and therefore become directors of companies etc, and go anywhere for promotion.....

I would say its more in terms of a lot of mens ambitions to be professional footballers and when they get their they want to win things, even in amateur teams you want to win things you want to do the best you can. It does show lack of ambition alright. he could do it for a couple of years even.

if i was career minded and wanted to rise to the top of my profession and the offer meant that i was working with a top company and really at the cutting edge of my industry then yes i definitely would.

however, if i was a humdrum 9 to 5 joe soap who views my job as a means to an end and not my raison d'être then i would probably just be happy picking up the pay check and taking the weekends off.
