Dublin City maintained their quest for automatic promotion with a hard fought win in Kilkenny on Saturday night, September 27, while elsewhere Kildare County suffered a setback against Galway United.

The Vikings are well on course for automatic promotion, and now sit on top of the First Division table thanks to former Cat, Alan O’Connor’s 30th minute goal against Kilkenny City, which saw them win 1-0.

Kildare have their own promotion aspirations this season, but the Thoroughbreds fell 2-0 to visiting Galway United at Station Road on Saturday. Barry Moran fired Galway in front after only ten minutes.

Kildare went in search for an equaliser but were caught out in the 65th minute, when Mayo native Alan Murphy continued his impressive scoring record with Galway’s second of the night.

Limerick missed out on the chance to capitalise on Kildare’s defeat, when Sligo Rovers scored a last gasp equaliser at the Showground’s. Derek McCarthy looked to have given Limerick all three points with his 74th minute goal.

However, the home side refused to lie down and received a penalty in the final minute. Ian Rossiter stepped up and slotted home to earn a share of the spoils for Sligo.

Athlone Town continued their impressive home form with a 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers on Saturday night. The goals from Damien Rushe and Michael McCann earned Athlone their fourth home win on the trot.

Rushe tapped the ball in after Cobh goalkeeper David Hennessy only parried Martin Reilly’s shot after eight minutes.

Town doubled their lead in the 15th minute, when McCann rounded a number of defenders before chipping over the goalkeeper.
