I'm going to the States next week for a holiday, and I intend to get myself a decent new camera to replace the one I've had for the last 4 years or so.
My current camera is the A310 - http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/fuji/finepix_a210-review/ It's a solid camera, but the flash is very poor, and shots taken indoors (church, concerts, etc) tend to be very dim, unless the place is spectacularly well lit. Any recommendations?
Not looking for anything fancy, something in the 6-8 megapixel range with a decent zoom and works well in darkened or bright areas.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 is the best point and shoot on the market at the moment. Quite a few SLR users have them as their P&S. I have one, it really is excellent, permanently in "Intelligent Auto" mode, handles everything for you.

No need to go to B&H for just a P&S. You are almost guaranteed to get hit by customs for it.

I have a TZ5 as well, and depending on what you want to do and how much you want to spend, check out the Canon G9.

I bought a camcorder (pal) and herself bought a digital camera in NY and we weren't checked. We took out the manuals etc and posted them back and took footage/photos as you do when you're on hols. I spent a fair bit on mine so i put some electric tape over the battery door as if it had some wear and tear. Basically there is nothing stopping you bringing a camera on hols.

What is P&S?

Sorry, I scanned through the OT looking for mention of him going to the States, and somehow managed to miss it! I thought you were telling him to order it online from B&H.

P&S is point & shoot / compact camera.

Ah right, no worries

P&S is point & shoot / compact camera.

Cheers for that .

A dirty Nikon, yuck! :p

Pix.ie is a good Irish photo hosting site.

By the way, where did you get it in the end?

Some mom and pop camera shop in Philadelphia, probably couldn't find it again if I had to

It would take a lot for me to move from picasaweb, import the photos from your camera using Picasa, organises them into folders automatically, then right click on the folder name, upload to web album, and you're done. No fuss, no muss.

I got a 51C in the states this year, probably the same camera & very nice P&S. Internal lense means easy to fit in pocket. Nice screen with wheel interface.

I went to get a Canon as the only P&S that with viewfinder (means can switch off screen to save battery) but I could not find.

From my research it is best to pick recognised camera brand as likely to have better quality lenses. Apparently 6-8 MegaPixel is enough unless want to print very large photos.

Almost no chance will be stopped by customs, just dump box & packaging & only keep most paperwork packed separately.
