Students plight worsens

Shamrock Rovers 2-0 UCD
UCD’s Premier Division survival looks increasingly precarious after Friday night’s (September 19) defeat to Shamrock Rovers at Belfield Park.

The Hoops have their own off the field troubles at the moment, but they put all of that behind them to chalk up a morale-boosting win.

UCD were under pressure early on and found themselves one down after 22 minutes. Goalkeeper Pat Jennings failed to hold a Stephen Grant cross and Glenn Fitzpatrick had the simplest of finishes to give his side the lead.

UCD’s troubles deepened before the break, when full back Hugh Davey was red carded for a tackle on Trevor Croly. Rovers extended their advantage in the 73rd minute when Fitzgerald set up Tony Grant for their second.

The students are now rooted to the bottom of the table on 12 points from 21 games while second from bottom Derry City have 19 points from 19 games.

Shamrock Rovers: Ryan, Croly, Doyle, Palmer, McGuinness, S Grant, Colwell, Boughanem, T Grant, Fitzpatrick, Keddy.

UCD: Jennings, Donnelly, Davey, McAuley, McNally, Martin, Gaffney (Colfer 73), O’Donnell, Griffin, Rooney (Leech 82), Cawley.

Referee: J O’Neill (Waterford)
