Bohs back in title chase

Cork City 1-2 Bohemians
Champions Bohemians fired themselves right back into the race for this year’s title with a victory over Cork City at Turner’s Cross on Friday night, September 19.

If Bohs do win the Premier Division this season, they may well look at this result as the game that helped them turn the corner, because Turner’s Cross is a difficult place to get three points.

Dave Morrison and Robbie Doyle netted for the visitors, before Cork’s Liam Kearney set up an exciting finish with a 75th minute strike. Bohs are now only one point behind second placed St Patrick’s Athletic, but do have two games in hand.

Shelbourne remain top, five points ahead of Stephen Kenny’s men with the same number of matches played.

Cork are fourth, but this defeat could have terminally damaged any championship aspirations they had. However, it was Cork that started brightly on Friday night and midfielder Kevin Doyle went close twice.

But the visitors took the lead after 34 minutes when Morrison latched onto Fergal Harkin’s cross to score from close range. Doyle made it two 20 minutes after the break, when he capitalised on Glen Crowe’s defensive clearance to fire home his sixth league goal this season.

Kearney, who came on at half-time to make his debut, rifled home from the edge of the box to set up a grandstand finish but the home side couldn’t find an equaliser.
