Liam Murphy hopes that established players like Ollie Cahill will continue to serve the club for the foreseeable future. Cahill, the most exciting winger in the country, is out of contract at the end of the season and is reported to have attracted the interest of Shamrock Rovers and others.

Said Murphy: “It is no surprise to us to hear of the admiration the Dublin clubs have for Ollie, but I believe he is happy here.

Negotiations on a new contract are ongoing with him and he knows it is our ambition to have him remain with Cork until the end of his career.”

Cahill’s contribution to Cork over the past five seasons has been considerable. His level of sportsmanship has been remarkable, given that he is often a marked man and Cork are clearly determined to keep him.

Said Murphy: “We are building a team for the future at Turner’s Cross and there is a good flow of promising young players coming through. We have ten matches to play in this league and we are going to give it our best shot and we expect to be stronger again next season.

“I don’t know why any player would want to leave Cork for another League club, given what is happening here. We want players like Ollie Cahill to give us the experience we need to get the best out of the youngsters.”

Cork’s form has been inconsistent recently and the failure to beat Longford Town last week-end was a set- back. Cork suffered because they failed to find a goal but Murphy took some encouragement from their achievement in keeping Longford scoreless.

“That is two games on the trot now without conceding a goal,” he said, “and that is a big improvement on what has been happening.

“But the goals have not been flowing for us even though our front-runners are very hard-working - Colin O’Brien, James Mulligan, Noel Hartigan. (?)

“We have plenty of options again now that Pat Morley is fit and Stephen O’Flynn is doing very well in training. I’d like us to reach a point where we had a partnership like Pat Morley and John Caulfield up front again - they were in the team when I was playing and they played so well together that you could always depend on Morley scoring 20 goals a season for you.

“But partnerships like that do not come very often and we will have to continue too work to try and improve that aspect of our football.”
