By coincidence, only last night I took a great book off the shelf that I hadn't read in years. '100 things to do with a dead cat'. As relevant today as the 1st time I read it.
In my experience people who despise cats normally love dogs.
dogs are blindly loyal, $hit everywhere and have little or no intelligence.
cats are aloof, clean,independent and intelligent.
its also my expereince that cat & dog owners resmeble their respective animals traits as mentioned above.

famous dog lovers : george bush,adolph hitler, paris hilton
my case is now rested.

I have equal revulsion for cats and dogs and you've touched on some of the reasons (for dogs at least) why.
Dogs are idiots, an evolutionary dead end who's only redeeming attribute lies in the ability of a small number of breeds to be trained to assist those humans who live with disability ...and the odd bit of search and rescue, crime detection etc...
Cats are beyond even that, they became surplus to requirements the day the electric rat trap hit the shelves.
Beyond that I like all animals pretty much the same* ...provided they're not underdone and have plenty of Caesar salad on the side.

As for dogs being stupid I agree some are. Mostly Labradors which are the only breed of dog I dont have time for. My wee Cleo who died a few months ago was a smart cookie. She always let us know what mood my dad was in before he came into the house so we could do like her (slink off and hide if he was in a bad mood or greet him with joy if he was in a good one) and she would know this before he got out of the van!
Some people call dogs stupid? The same animal that lies around scratching itself all day, gets free food and shelter, and hops the back wall for a bit of sex whenever it feels like? And the people calling them stupid are the ones working near 40 hours week to be barely able to eat and sleep in relative comfort?

As for cats v dogs, its dogs for me, cats may look cute and catch the odd mouse but they dont guide the blind, protect people and property, go to war with armys, protect and serve with law inforcement, sniff out earthquake survivors and so on...... besides theres something creepy about cat owners.
