If you look up a bit further you'll see that joke was used already...not really funny a second time.

Personally I'm concerned and annoyed that the apparent massive land reclaimation, no ...complete draining of the Shannon Estuary wasn't the subject of more consultation and discussion before getting the go ahead. Must've been another job Dick Roche signed off on as he cleared his desk.

It's a job that appears to have been completed with uncharacteristic speed for this wee island as well.

You know, the more you look at it, the more Ireland begins to resemble a smirking Corkie. It's got everything; the beady eyes, the characteristically porcine snout, the nicotine-stained beard, even the bald patch at the back of the head. No wonder they think they own the place.

(Dublin, you'll note, is rightly pinching his thick, red neck.)

Mmmm, I think Dustin (of Eurovision fame) said it resembled a Teddy bear before, and I'm inclined to agree with him. Very huggable appearance off the island at any rate (to the extent such is possible for a 500x200 mile object). I don't think you can deny that Ireland is quite cute from a stratospheric perspective though!

So tell us Osarusan, was this thread inspired by nostalgic yearnings? Additionally, I'm curious as to how/if Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in Japan.... Presumably you honoured the occasion with a pint of Guinness in the local at the very least?

the picture was on the first page of wikipedia, and I happened to see it.

Having seen it however, I was immediately filled with nostalgia for

    • rude shop staff who ask "Have you not got anything smaller?" when customers offer them legal tender for a purchase.
    • fresh, clean air
    • Public transport which is late as a matter of course, to the point where being 5 minutes late isn't even viewed as late any more
    • green fields
    • good Guinness
    • proper dairy products
    • Dirty roads, dirtied by dirty people

In Japan, there are a few parades (a fellow teacher from Ireland played St. Patrick in the Yokohama parade for a couple of years), but understandably, it's not a well-known occasion.

In honour of the occasion, I baked 2 loaves of soda-bread for my students today, and they were suitably awed, although more by the fact that a man can cook something, than the bread itself.

And later, I shall retire to an Irish pub I frequent, and tell many Americans that I'm not familiar with their cousin Joe from "Wacklow", or their uncle Tony from "Slaygo", etc. In fine Irish tradition, I will leave my wife and child at home while I drink.

Very true. Ireland's outline does look like a teddy bear. I've always thought Sweden and Norway are about to gobble up poor auld Denmark in a European map. And Italy looks like a football player, Sicily the boot and Sardinia the ball. Spain looks like it's coughing.

Now that's a map and you can see the important part of Ireland (i.e. Dublin) when focused on Ireland and enlarged.
