    Router issue

    Right,

In the middle of updating the tech/media setup for the parents. Bought them a new Belkin N+ router ttp://www.belkin.com/uk/support/product/?lid=enu&pid=f5d8635uk4a&scid=314

This has a USB port at the back where you are supposed to be able to plug in a hard disc. I am having issue with a Maxtor 500GB hard disc. I have plugged into USB Flash Drives(up to 16GB) with no issue, but the Router doesn't recognise the Maxtor. If you plug the Hard disc directly into any of the machine it is recognised.

I have updated the firmware so no issue on that front. Anyone any idea?

Was going to buy one of these tomorrow and run a 1 terrabyte drive on it but now worried.

    Whats OS is being used?

Is it a brand new drive?

Does it show under computer management > START > CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS

    BR,

    Mixed network

    1 Desktop running Vista
    1 Latop running Vista
    1 Netbook running XP.

Drive is about a year old, it is a NTFS.

Don't need to go into administrative tools, it automatically shows up when plugged into the various machines. However when plugged into the router the lit isn't even lit up and the router doesn't recognise anything being plugged in.

Does the router support NTFS? If it doesn't have any media on it, try converting it to FAT32.

Router supports NTFS. It is fairly full at the minute anyway.

Ok, does it have an upper size limit it'll recognise?

    Naw,

Apparently not. 30 minutes on the phone to Belkin and they suggest "resetting the router". I'm dubious.

we used to have a belkin router in the house, kept dropping signals and disconnecting various machines connected to it at random
eventually just got shot of it and got a Linksys WRT610N - http://www.linksysbycisco.com/EU/en/products/WRT610N
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

The new 1.5TB drive I had ordered has arrived, seems to be working seamlessly.
