Two more questions for you all :

    1) What was the first LOI European fixture shown live on Irish TV ?

    2) What was the first LOI domestic fixture shown live on TV ?

    Agreed with everything.

We've all had our say about the hype Sky put on things and make nothing into something, but at least it looks good and I'm sure if Sky Sports were showing Rovers V Bohs or whoever on that night, there wouldn't be too many people asking for it to be turned off in the pubs like it is now with RTE or Setanta.

They made the EPL the money crazy success that it is today, so sure why not have a go at the LOI

It would be real proffesional coverage and would fill a gap for sky sports. I do think it may be time that the irish sky tv customer got something back from sky tv, and they started to reinvest some of that money back into ireland.

I know the chances are slim to none, but i think it would be just what the league needs to get sponsorships and interest into the league.
Not a bad idea, I suppose.

The FAI could use the league as a bargaining tool when selling the international rights to Sky.

Think thats why a few Irish league matches are shown on Sky already.

Problem is that the comercial value of ROI matches is relatively low, since the government bowed to RTE pressure and insisted that the games had to be shown on terrestrial TV as well as Sky. And as RTE own two of the terrestrial channels out-right, has a share in the third and has vastly deeper income than the other channels, surprise surprise it's RTE that gets to buy the games as well as Sky.

Anyways - as already stated, the FAI has already done this deal with RTE. Hence MNS.

The RTE deal will be up for renewal at some stage, and I think if the FAI proposed a package that would include all home interantionals and 1 compulsory live EL match every week and a certain amount of FAI cup games, the govt may be forced to review the legislation demanding qualifiers be shown on terestrial tv, allowing Sky in.

If Sky were showing the EL every week it would probably result in the games being picked up by other broadcasters worldwide as well.

Such a deal would open loads of commercial oportunities for all clubs with major mutinationals such as stadium naming rights etc.

Most if not all Irish born international players over 45 years of age would have gone to LOI matches when they were kids. Rovers had huge support in the 60's and very early 70's. As had Waterford, Cork Hibs and a few other teams.

That was part of the deal- it just hasn't come in yet. Can't remember what season it will be but RTÉ will increase the number of live games they show each season and will eventually show one each week.

    I was there.

I was at both of those tournaments 2 yrs in a row.The first year was the best. Also in that year i got Kenny Dagleish's autograph as he was manager of Newcastle back then.We stayed behind under the stand after the games and got loads of autographs when the players were getting onto the bus,as a young teenager back then it was a "cool" day.
Sky could be showing an under 10s match and would still make a good effort in terms of research, marketing and presentation etc.

Depressingly I think Con Murphy said 2013 on MNS yesterday.

As much as im not a sky fan, they would be far better for the league, and i'd love to know why we have to wait another 3 yrs for weekly live matches, also will it be same time every week, same channel or a case of 3 or 4 different channels showing matches at various times...

If the FAI offered the rights to some LOI games to Sky as part of the international package, would it be worth it for the exposure the league would get, and would Sky bother to show them?

    Almost right.

The semi-final Derry 3 Celtic 2 was only shown on Sky Sports Scotland at that time although the final was indeed shown on Sky sports world wide.

The Derry 1 V Benfica 2 game was shown live by RTE and was the main game on match of the day on the BBC that night.

:footnote: Benfica lost in the final that year and it was the same team minus De Canio that went on to win the SPL that year for Celtic who started the game.
So if you think Bohs are big read this. http://www.astronomy.ie/perpespective.html

If they are willing to show five Irish League games why wouldn't they show LOI matches

The Autralian A league is shown on Sky Affiliates around the world as a weekly one hour highlights package show. And I consider the LOI to be at least as good as the Aussie league.

I remember seeing the FAI Cup final highlights a few years back on Sky, not sure what the deal was, I assume it was a one off.

The FAI Missed the boat when they sold the International games to sky a few years ago that was the time to strike. Until that comes up again Sky won't be breaking the door down.
