Eamon Dunphy has great memories of Tolka.

Also great memories of Miltown being sold during the Celtic Tiger era, which started about ten years early in his head..

I think it's only realistic of the Sun to assume it will be 2020 at the earliest to see football in a new Dalyer, and even at that it will just be a pitch and one big stand. I'd estimate the other stands will happen at about the same rate as Tallaght i.e. about 10 yrs down the line it will be finished.

The same Dunphy who praised the Kilcoyne family for being heroes of Irish Football, in the Sindo, at the time of the Miltown sale, having bought it cheap from nuns if I remember correctly, promising to keep it for sport. I have regarded every utterance of his as BS ever since.

Yeah, it's very frustrating that we can't get it together in terms of building stadia. Just watching the Ireland match starting now and George Hamilton mentioned that the stadium is the sort of thing the league should be aiming for. It's a beautiful ground. Puts the like of Tallght or Turners Cross even to shame, let alone some of the lesser grounds in the league. The new Dalymount should be at least as good. But will it be ? Somehow I doubt it.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Saw on twitter that Tallaght is to get a third stand to bring it up to UEFA standard. https://twitter.com/dlooney/status/788037790432911360

    Dermot Looney ‏@dlooney 17m

SDCC agrees to provide funding for the third stand in @TallaghtStadium to bring the stadium to UEFA Category 4 standard. Happy to support.

    Dermot Looney ‏@dlooney 9m

The new stand, at the ground's south end, will bring the official capacity of the stadium up to 8000 and will meet other UEFA requirements

Much better idea to put it at the car park end.

FAI and Harps together working hard toward new stadium is about the only news on that front. Incredibly frustrating for everyone on the board that there's been no movement but just have to be patient.

Would be better again if the new stand was linked to the existing stand. Hopefully those installing the seats in the new stand won't have played with Lego as a kid and have some kind of co ordination

Only right that Dundalk get to play in a home ground befitting their performances this year.

There wasn't. Delayed due to Anthony Foley funeral. Pitch gonna be in tatters from rugby far too soft for it.

Part and parcel of a municipal stadium.

That's disappointing, given that it might wreck the surface for football, especially since Limerick try to play a passing game. but it was always a possibility since it's a municipal ground and Limerick is a big rugby city.
Does club rugby in Ireland really need a ground like MF though? I was in town a couple of weekends ago and was passing trinity when I noticed a couple of rugby teams warming up. Went in to have a look and it turns out it was a league rugby match between Trinity and Young Munster, the top division in Ireland for club rugby. I stayed and watched the 1st half - there was maybe 200 ppl standing watching it. I'm guessing these are 2 of the most storied club teams in ireland... they were playing on a lovely sat afternoon in beautiful grounds in the very middle of our most populated city, and there was 200 ppl!! Altho one of them was Paul O O'Connell so maybe he counts for 2 ppl :P.
How many ppl usually attend club rugby matches in Limerick? And does anyone know how many rugby matches wil be played on it per yr. Wil the pitch be able to sustain it?

The postponed game was the Charity Cup Final between Young Munster & Garryowen. I don't think they'll be too many senior games played here as there is no bar facility in the ground which is the main revenue source for most AIL clubs on match day. I heard a few school boy games may be played here. Attendance for club rugby is steady with the senior clubs in Div1& 2 pulling in around 300 -500 per game. This increases substantially when local teams play each other. In relation to the pitch as already mentioned its soft and really hasn't matured yet. It wont take a sustained amount of games for sure.

There is no need for rugby to be played there at all really plenty of rugby grounds around the town all with bars. Only reason it is being played in the Markets Field at all is because one of the suits that thinks he owns the ground has connections to Garryowen rugby club and is mad keen to show off to his rugger buddies. We can't have too many complaints it not being our ground and all but they could have at least let the pitch settle a bit before tearing it up.
