    Idea for a new rule.

Just watched Italy beat Czechs, and saw something which I've seen happen thousands of times in football..........

.......a player collapses in apparent agony on the field, and stays down for a minute or so. He limps off/is stretchered off, but within seconds of reaching the sidelines, is waiting to run back onto the field of play, having received the legendary douse of cold water, and all the medical properties it contains.

    How about this?

Any player who is injured badly enough to need to leave the field of play is not allowed to return until 3 minutes have passed.

If the player really is injured, then waiting 3 minutes to see the extent of the injury is a good thing.

If the player is faking it to waste time/get a player booked, maybe this 3 minute system will be a strong enough deterrent.

What do you think? Any reasons I havent come up with as to why this wouldnt work?

Sounds a good idea. Something should be done to get this sort of thing out of the game.

That's why, CHris Kamara, please note, they introduced the rule of having to leave the field to make it a deterrent. Not sure about 3 minutes as it might become hard to manage but perhaps can only come back on after the next deadball.

What they mostly do now is roll around for a while and then hobble up when they've wasted time to avoid going off.

Good idea and of course the 4th offical could monitor. But could it lead to a few crunchers every now and then to ensure they are a few less players on the pitch. Hard to determine between the genuine and the play acting but could weed out a few.

well if the crucher is deemed a foul then it could be the amn who fouled who gets sent off.
great idea, hope someone takes note of it.

Another thing i hate is when a plyer is barely hurt they go down and the other team have to put the bal out to be sporting.its getting ridiculous and something needs to be done about it.

This kicking the ball out when a player has received a knock has reached epidemic proportions. I quite agree that it's beyond a joke. It's supposed to be an act of sportsmanship but when the player is barely injured (if at all) and is writhing around in agony, what's sporting about that.

Whats wrong with a player getting attention while play continues as happens in rugby but if the play comes too near an injured player and a physio, the referee can halt play at that point.

The worst was when Owen was injured in the England v Sweden game. He was off the pitch but England still insisted on Sweden putting the ball out. Nonsense.

I think they should just stop the clock so wasting time becomes pointless and goes out the window. This would be a far better way of doing things and you would never have injury time.

I agree that some players time-waste but on most occassions when a player gets a knock all he needs is the 'magic-sponge' treatment and he's ok in a minute or two. You see this down the local park every Sunday morning.

One of the commentators mentioned a "sin bin" for 2nd yellows like hand ball which makes a lot of sense. Violent conduct the red ok but for technical offences like not giving the ball back, hand ball, not retreating 10 yards, a sin bin would make sense. Avoids games of 9 vs 9.

Isn't the rule re injured that you have to go off first and then get treated on the sidelines? Instead, a player goes down, is "treated" on the pitch, goes off and comes back on again. If the rule were implemented properly, it would work.

Disagree with the idea of a sin-bin. (I assume the idea came up in the Portugal v Holland game). The players know the rules before the head out for the game. If they're going to do stupid things like deliberate handball or throwing the ball away, they deserve to walk. Sod them. I quite enjoyed the bit of 9 v 10! Was hoping for a Dutch equaliser to see how many more would walk. Could have been the first World Cup game to be decided no by who scored more but by who was left with seven players!

I agree that most people blame the refs for the players' stupidity but that said the punishment being the same for a handball and viciously chopping someone down shouldn't be the same I think.

The same punishment doesn't apply. Handball is a yellow, viciously chopping someone down is (should be, anyway) a red. Costinha had done other stupid things as well.

    Ok, remove the word "viciously".

OK. Yellows all round. Deliberate handball - like Constinha's - is a cynical foul. You're getting yellow not because you might have hurt the poor ruch darling, but because you've stopped the opposition team from attacking in an unfair manner. Both a foul and handball achieve this, so the punishment should be the same, especially if they are premeditated and cynical.

There should be a red card fcor stupidity too. Ans Costinho should be banned for a month for his stupidity. Sin bin is a rubbish idea IMO

Both get banned for the next game for stupidity. They deserve it too.

Not as if the rules are a surprise to anyone.

IMO this is the only way to go, the injury time rarley adds up to the time thats been wasted with injuries, moaning, etc
It's not actually winning that counts, it's playing the game with attitude

A recent example is the Holland Portugal game, I think there were just 6 minutes added on, gives a licence to the portugeese to continue with these antics.
I remember in the Uefa final porto and celtic the ref added on 5 minutes for the 2nd extra time half, exactly the amount of time wasted by Porto in the last 7 minutes of "play".
